Title: Monolingual English Speakers Lack Understanding of Global English
Body: A University of Melbourne professor spoke recently against English speakers' complacency in their monolingualism, emphasizing that speaking only one language is a distinct disadvantage because it limits opportunities to communicate with non-English speakers and also leads native speakers to find fault with non-natives' language skills. He added that educational planning must incorporate foreign language instruction to combat this. Title: Toddlers Benefit from Second Language Instructioin
Body: Citing research that suggests bilingual children are more successful academically, many Canadian parents are choosing to enroll their preschool-aged children in programs which feature foreign language instruction. Parents also want to give their children a head start for later language learning. But there are potential disadvantages when too many languages are introduced at once, or when instruction becomes too rigorous and formal. Title: Podcasts in Spanish
Body: I have just discovered a wonderful resource for listening comprehension in advanced Spanish classes. If you have the most updated version of I-Tunes (I dowloaded 4.9), you can receive podcasts. If you seach under "News", there is an ABC news broadcast in Spanish with David Puentes. Each week you can listen to two minutes broadcasts from the Spanish speaking world. If you subscribe (and it's FREE), you can receive these each week, save to your I-Tunes files, and burn a Cd after every couple of broadcasts. I plan on using these in my AP class. Incidentally, this will be great practice for the new AP exam in 2007 when students will have to synthsise information they hear in a radio broadcast to either write an essay or prepare an oral report. Title: North Korea Warms Up to English
Body: Opportunities to practice English in North Korea are still rare, but they are increasing. Most books, newspapers, advertisements, movies and songs in English are still illegal. However, the government, recognizing the importance of English in international affairs, has slowly begun to encourage students to speak with foreign visitors, to send them abroad, and to allow foreign teachers inside.
