Title: New Book: Differentiated Learning
Body: From: http://www.stenhouse.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=8946&r=sb050425 Differentiated Learning: Language and Literacy Projects that Address Diverse Backgrounds and Cultures Kathy Paterson Differentiated Learning demonstrates simple ways teachers in grades K–9 can manipulate content by aligning tasks with instructional goals, break down objectives into manageable parts, create flexible and effective working groups, encourage students to take part in projects, and vary expectations based on the needs and abilities of students. The projects in Differentiated Learning incorporate the interconnections among language, culture, involvement, peer support, and learning. Each focuses on literacy activities along with curriculum connections and opportunities for differentiation. This valuable resource includes ready-to-copy surveys and other activities to involve students, as well as suggestions for addressing diversities that range from the cultural, linguistic, and religious to the intellectual, physical, and behavioral.

Title: New Book: Making Sense
Body: From: http://www.stenhouse.com/productcart/pc/viewprd.asp?idProduct=8949&r=n67&REFERER= Making Sense provides answers to many common questions asked by teachers of English language learners: How do we organize small-group comprehension instruction? How do we select books to teach strategies? How do we know our kids are getting it—and what do we do when they don’t get it? It is an easy-to-use, practical resource for ELD, ESL, and ESOL pull-out teachers, and for push-in teachers working "in-class" to support English language learners. The book’s five main sections are geared to the stages of language proficiency, and lessons are divided into ’younger’ and ’older’ students, spanning kindergarten through grade 8. The authors outline fifty-two lessons that teach students how to make connections, ask questions, visualize (make mental images), infer, determine importance, and synthesize.

Title: 2005 TESOL Summer Intensive Workshop
Body: From: http://www.american.edu/tesol/SU05%20Institute/SU05Workshop.htm Workshop Leaders David Nunan, Anaheim University, University of Hong Kong Don Bunis, distance educator and consultant, university registrar emeritus, American University Brock Brady, American University Emily Lite, Academic Director, BizEnglish A decade after the “Information super highway” was announced, distance learning opportunities are wide spread; however, effective distance education curricula are much rarer. Looking at models of engaging on-line learning and successful distance education programs, this workshop is based on tried and true course design practices for both distance language learning and TESOL teacher education, giving participants opportunities to engage in hands-on, on-line course design for their student audiences. The workshop, designed primarily for teachers without experience in distance education, introduces participants to techniques and activities that are effective and easy to implement. The workshop requires no more technological comfort than being at ease with emailing, word processing and downloading documents. With an emphasis on design principles rather than on specific technologies, this workshop provides a foundation for anyone engaging in distance education, whether it be in the next few months or in the next few years.
