Title: Using Songs to Teach English
Body: A recent discussion on the TESL listerv generated a variety of suggestions for using songs in English classrooms. Below are two suggested Web sites, followed by two postings of recommended singing activities. The ESL Song Directory http://gs.fanshawec.on.ca/tlwm/direct.htm Editorial on the process of choosing songs for use in teaching English, including a recommended playlist of popular songs http://www.guardian.co.uk/weekend/story/0,3605,1464893,00.html ---- I give my students a task with songs. They have to find out the main grammar points in a song (according to what we are studying at the moment); search a little about the group's or singer's history and life (just to make the presentation more interesting) and also prepare an activity for the class using the songs. After the presentation (oral, to the class), they are very excited, searching for the most suitable song to do the task. Netto, P. Songs for teaching ESL/EFL. Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list. TESL-L@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (24 Apr. 2005). ---- My students and I sing acapella every day in class as a warm-up exercise. Since I teach in the States and am American we do traditional or classic American songs. Here's my list: You Are My Sunshine Home on the Range Michael, Row the Boat Ashore Swing Low She'll be Comming Round the Mountain Take Me Out to the Ballgame Auld Lang Syne We start the semester with Round the Mountain, complete with all the goofy gestures. Our last song is Auld Lang Syne. Once they understand the significance of the lyrics, of old friends, for the good times, of endings and beginnings, the last few times we sing it becomes quite a heartfelt and teary scene for all of us. Often, the most requested song is You Are my Sunshine. Next semester I am going to add Hound Dog a la Elvis. Kelso, Z. Songs for teaching ESL/EFL. Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list. TESL-L@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (24 Apr. 2005).
