Title: Dallas Principals May Be Required to Learn Spanish
Body: A trustee of the Dallas, Texas school district is proposing that Spanish speaking proficiency be made a requirement of all principal positions, citing concern on behalf of Spanish-speaking parents who have trouble communicating with administration. Principals would have to begin their language study within one year of being hired and become proficient speakers in three years. Opponents say that making bilingualism a requirement is less preferable than simply encouraging it, and that simply taking a class will not go far in helping someone learn to communicate. Title: New Book: ESOL Tests and Testing
Body: From: http://www.tesol.org/s_tesol/sec_document.asp?CID=326&DID=3460 Authors: Stephen Stoynoff and Carol A. Chapelle This volume describes how ESOL tests and test users have changed greatly in the past few decades. Some widely used ESOL tests have been revised, with a number of new tests incorporating advances in computer technology. In addition, many more ESOL practitioners than in the past are responsible for selecting and using tests. Stephen Stoynoff and Carol A. Chapelle introduce teachers and administrators to the principles, methods, and vocabulary of language assessment. Twenty-one reviewers of ESOL tests consider test purpose, methods, and justification of their use in particular situations. The book’s sequence approximates how teachers and administrators might select and evaluate a standardized test.
