A decade after the “Information super highway” was announced, distance learning opportunities are wide spread; however, effective distance education curricula are much rarer. Looking at models of engaging on-line learning and successful distance education programs, this workshop is based on tried and true course design practices for both distance language learning and TESOL teacher education, giving participants opportunities to engage in hands-on, on-line course design for their student audiences.

The workshop, designed primarily for teachers without experience in distance education, introduces participants to techniques and activities that are effective and easy to implement. The workshop requires no more technological comfort than being at ease with emailing, word processing and downloading documents. With an emphasis on design principles rather than on specific technologies, this workshop provides a foundation for anyone engaging in distance education, whether it be in the next few months or in the next few years.
