Title: Welcome, Carla Consolini!

CASLS welcomes Carla Consolini, a graduate student in UO’s Language Teaching Studies program. Carla will be working on the Spanish version of the Intercultural, Pragmatic, and Interactional Competence (IPIC) measure. She will also be assisting with Intercom by curating links and contributing occasional articles. Carla says, “I have been interested in the processes and complexities of second language acquisition since I started learning a second language myself, a considerable amount of years ago. As time went by my interest became more academic and scientific. So, when I first learned about CASLS at the University of Oregon I knew where I wanted to be and the type of work I wanted to do. I am looking forward to learn as much as possible from the people I work with, and to be able to contribute to the field as much as I can.”

Title: Call: Minority Languages Spoken or Signed and Inclusive Spaces

The objective of this conference is to question the way that inclusive spaces consider minority languages. Its intent is to foster original and innovative initiatives related to this purpose in a variety of disciplines. There are two broad topics under which papers may be submitted: Praxeology and Paradigms. Abstracts may be submitted in English, French, French Sign Language, or International Sign Language by December 20, 2019. The conference will be held May 25-27, 2020 in Paris, France.

Title: What Assembly Bill 5 Means for Linguists

With the passage of Assembly Bill 5 (CA AB 5) in California this past September, a large number of independent contractors have been reclassified as employees (largely with companies like Uber in mind). Despite their requests for an exemption to this bill, interpreters and translators were dismissed, creating instability in the future of the careers of those who perform freelance work. This article provides both pros and cons to CA AB 5, weighing the consequences it may have throughout the state.

Title: 100,000 Students Earned the Seal of Biliteracy, But They’re in a Handful of States

A new study has been released showing that 100,000 students have earned the Seal of Biliteracy; however, 86% of those students were only from five states: California, North Carolina, Illinois, Virginia, and New Jersey. These results point to the fact that while the Seal of Biliteracy has been implemented in almost every state, it still requires extensive work as a program to reach as many students as possible.

The development of the new unified Inkutut writing system (Inuktut Qaliujaaqpait) has fostered unity across the Inuit people in Canada. It was an important step in their self-determination of language. Further, this article makes it markedly clear that the implementation of Inuktut Qaliujaaqpait will not erase the syllabics used by different dialects in the past, but rather create another viable option for written communication between dialects.

Title: Indigenous-Language-Friendly Approach to Digital Learning and Data

The New Zealand Ministry of Education recently chose Edsby as the tool to facilitate the country’s Te Rito National Learner Repository and Data Exchange. This tool has allowed for students’ achievement data to be movable and individualized in Enlglish and in Māori. As a result, Edsby has been recognized as a positive platform that easily integrates with a variety of student databases, supports multiple languages, and maintains data privacy.

Included are short synopses that could be provided to students to help them self-select literature that they are interested in reading.
