Body: ARABIC LEARN CONFERENCE Sept 20-22, 2010 at WEST POINT The Foreign Language Program Office of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) and the National Cryptologic School (NCS) are pleased to host a series of Language Education and Resources Network (LEARN) conferences. The purpose of the LEARN conference series is to provide language professionals a venue to interact with their colleagues where they can discuss and explore issues related to the science and technology of foreign language education. The target audience for these conferences includes instructors, course developers, and other language professionals from U.S. government affiliated institutions. Title: Call for Papers: Teaching to Native-like Levels of Language Proficiency
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/21/21-1982.html The Coalition of Distinguished Language Centers, the only international organization dedicated to research and application of research in the area of teaching and achieving native-like foreign-language proficiency, will be holding its 8th annual symposium at the Westin Baltimore-Washington Airport in Linthicum, Maryland December 3-4, 2010. Professors, researchers, administrators, and others with experience in teaching, studying, translation/interpretation, or assessment at the near-native level of proficiency in any foreign language are invited to submit a one-page abstract (exclusive of bibliography) on any aspect of language study at the distinguished level. There will be several areas of focus: teaching methods and practices, language learning experiences, research, translation/interpretation, program development/management, and assessment (proficiency, diagnostic, dynamic, other). Whole panels may be suggested and abstracts submitted together, if desired. Submission deadline: no later than October 1, 2010. Body: Call for Proposals: “Teaching Japan: Pedagogical Possibilities in U.S. Higher Education” Conference Location: DePaul University, Chicago, Illinois Abstract Submission Deadline: July 30, 2010 DePaul University’s Japanese Studies Program invites paper and panel proposals for a conference entitled “Teaching Japan: Pedagogical Possibilities in U.S. Higher Education,” to be held at DePaul’s Lincoln Park campus in Chicago on October 29 and 30, 2010. Those interested are invited to submit proposals for presentations that explore areas including, but not limited to, the following: * the ways in which teaching (particularly at the undergraduate level) may feed into research; * the potentials and dangers of various strategies for positioning Japanese studies within institutions of higher learning; * experiences in or visions for incorporating experiential learning into Japan studies curricula; * successful (or, at least, informative) experiments with non-traditional or unconventional course topics, course structures, classroom practices, uses of technology, etc.; * the history or future of the staffing of Japan studies programs (hypothetical profiles for faculty and how they might be distributed within an institution); * the need (or not) for bridging the language and "content" course divide; * ideas for or experiences in incorporating cultural analysis in beginner language courses and/or ideas for or experiences in incorporating foreign language material in other than language courses Download the full call for papers from http://www.jfny.org/files/doc/Teaching%20Japan.pdf

(SLTI) Ms. Paula Diamanti is a Bilingual Content Specialist and Translation Coordinator at SLTI. Description: The webinar "Test Translation for ELLs: Basic Concepts and Methods" will provide a synopsis of the translation processes and procedures for large-scale assessments for ELLs. The presentation will outline “what to consider” when translating such materials for ELLs, as well as a step-by-step demonstration of these methods, which include: translation, transadaptation and concurrent-development. The presenters also will discuss the validity and reliability of translations and will focus their remarks on written translations, not on oral or spontaneous translations of assessments. Body: STARTALK 2010 Professional Development Workshop for Persian In the summer of 2010, Penn will host a two-week residential professional development workshop for Persian instructors. This summer STARTALK program will accept 20 participants from schools and colleges around the country. The participants will receive training in Standards-based curriculum design, and materials development integrating technology. The main objective of this two-week residential workshop is to familiarize new and experienced teachers of Persian with the latest pedagogical trends in standards-based language teaching, with various methods in integrating technology for the teaching of Persian, and initiate further cooperation in language teaching.
