Title: New Confucius Institute at the University at Buffalo
Body: From http://www.buffalonews.com/2010/04/09/1014747/confucius-institute-debuts.html Confucius Institute debuts UB site to become part of worldwide, Chinese-sponsored network By Jay Rey April 10, 2010 A new institute at the University at Buffalo will offer Western New York a dose of Chinese language and culture. UB on Friday celebrated the grand opening of its Confucius Institute, part of a growing network of institutes sponsored worldwide by a Chinese organization. Universities worldwide applied for grants from the Chinese Language Council International — representing a dozen state ministries and commissions — which has provided funds to launch about 300 of these language and learning centers across the globe. Skeptics have dismissed them as an obvious political public relations campaign by China. Supporters see them as a chance to enhance worldwide relations with China, a country that has a rich, complex history and had long been closed off to the rest of the world. Title: Article: Napa Valley Language Academy Joins International Spanish Academies
Body: From http://www.napavalleyregister.com/news/local/article_08670efc-4aa0-11df-a600-001cc4c002e0.html Spain looks fondly on local school By NATALIE HOFFMAN April 18, 2010 Thanks to Napa Valley Language Academy joining a special consortium, its students are reaping benefits enjoyed at only three other California campuses. The local elementary school is a new member of the International Spanish Academies — a partnership of Spanish-language immersion campuses in North America sponsored by the Ministry of Education of Spain. NVLA’s dual immersion program leans on a half native English-speaking, and half native Spanish-speaking student body to help all its students learn a second language. When NVLA earned its title, one benefit came in the form of a new staff member at the school. Mar Gamez, a former journalist, is a culture and language assistant hailing from Spain. The findings from the Center for Research and Reform in Education at Johns Hopkins University may take some fuel out of the fire in the national debate over which is best for teaching children from immigrant families to read: English immersion or bilingual education.
