Title: Podcasts: Underwood's Latin Course for Beginners and Medical Students
Body: From http://latinformedicalstudents.mypodcast.com Latinum's issue in audio in November 2009 of Underwood's course in Latin for Medical Students is a unique offering. Underwood wrote his course for medical students taking the Latin examinations at London's Guild of Apothecaries and the Royal College of Physicians in the early 1800's. These students, as non-Latin specialists, required a common-sense approach. The result is a very accessible beginner's Latin course. It would also be useful as a revision course for the more seasoned student, as it approaches the subject from a fresh angle. Title: Article: What Language Should Teachers of French Teach?
Body: From http://www.nclrc.org/cultureclub/teachers_lounge.html#language What language should teachers of French teach? By Marcel LaVergne November 2009 Mr. LaVergne writes: “I strongly recommend that all teachers of French read Entre les murs (which has been made into a movie entitled The Class and which won the Palme d’Or as best picture at the Cannes film festival in 2008) because it provides a realistic depiction of the demographic change taking place in some of the Parisian schools. Since the language used in the book follows the rules of spoken French, one needs to question if the teaching of mostly written rules of French in our classrooms will realistically prepare our students to confront the fact that people do not speak the way that they write.” Read the full article, which is in French and English, at http://www.nclrc.org/cultureclub/teachers_lounge.html#language

Title: Article: Most Oregon Schools Slow to Get English Learners Proficient
Body: From http://www.oregonlive.com/education/index.ssf/2009/12/most_oregon_schools_too_slow_g.html Most Oregon schools slow to get English learners proficient By Betsy Hammond December 10, 2009 After five or more years learning English as their second language in Oregon schools, 75 percent of those students still are not proficient in English according to a report out today. Portland Public Schools has failed its English language learners for so long that the state this fall cut off federal funding for students with limited English proficiency, a loss of more than $600,000 a year to the state's largest district. The Oregon Department of Education says it's crucial that schools help students gain proficiency in English, and the U.S. Department of Education says five years should be enough time for a typical student to master the language. But most districts aren't coming close to that target. Read the full article at http://www.oregonlive.com/education/index.ssf/2009/12/most_oregon_schools_too_slow_g.html

Title: The New York Times ESOL Teacher of the Year Nomination Form
Body: The New York Times ESOL Teacher of the Year Nomination Form The New York Times has long recognized the challenges faced by immigrants to the United States, and supports efforts to help immigrants build new lives in this country. Essential to the success of any immigrant is the ability to speak and write English. For that reason, The Times created the annual ESOL Teacher of the Year Award, for one outstanding teacher of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) in New York City. The purpose of this award is to recognize one teacher in New York City whose commitment to his or her students is demonstrated by consistently going “above and beyond” the call of duty to help adult students learn English and develop the skills needed to create successful new lives in the United States. Eligible nominees include any ESOL teacher of adult-learners working in one of the following counties: Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Westchester and Nassau. Teachers who teach outside those areas are not eligible. Nominations will be accepted from ESOL students and teaching colleagues and administrators. All nominations must be submitted by February 5. http://www.nytimes.whsites.net/communityaffairs/programs/esol_nomination_10/form.php and http://www.nytimes.whsites.net/communityaffairs/programs/esol.html Savoy, E.
