What language should teachers of French teach?
By Marcel LaVergne
November 2009

Mr. LaVergne writes: “I strongly recommend that all teachers of French read Entre les murs (which has been made into a movie entitled The Class and which won the Palme d’Or as best picture at the Cannes film festival in 2008) because it provides a realistic depiction of the demographic change taking place in some of the Parisian schools. Since the language used in the book follows the rules of spoken French, one needs to question if the teaching of mostly written rules of French in our classrooms will realistically prepare our students to confront the fact that people do not speak the way that they write.”
