Body: From: "Kazuko Ozawa" / senseionline@yahoogroups.com> Dear Colleague, I would like to invite you to : The 18th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Language Teachers Association of New England (JLTA of NEW ENGLAND) Wellesley College, Massachusetts, June 12, & 13, 2004 The Conference this year is being hosted by Wellesley College in Massachusetts. Wellesley College is a beautiful college located in the suburbs of Boston-30 minutes by bus or train from downtown Boston. The topic of this year's conference is "Dynamic approaches to teaching Japanese " and we are fortunate to have as our special guest speaker MITSUKO HASE from Japan, a well known Performing Artist of Japanese Language. She will be performing on the first night and will give a seminar on the second day. Participants are welcome to submit presentation proposals. Presenters will be expected to discuss ways to improve the teaching of Japanese at both the pre-college and the college levels. Pre-college teachers are strongly encouraged to apply. Papers may be presented either in Japanese or English, and each presentation should be 20 minutes long with an additional 5 minutes for discussion. An abstract to be submitted with the proposal should be no more than one page in English or Japanese. The deadline for the proposal is March 12, 2004. Abstracts may be submitted either by e-mail (kozawa@wellesley.edu) or by regular mail to Professor Carol Morley, Japanese Department, Wellesley College, 106 Central Street, Wellesley, MA 02481. Body: From: "Keiko Schneider" 2004 Summer Seminars and Institutes for School Teachers http://www.neh.gov/projects/si-school.html Each year NEH offers teachers opportunities to study humanities topics in a variety of Summer Seminars and Institutes. The dates and duration of each project are listed under each title. The application deadline is March 1, 2004. Eligibility Full-time teachers in American K-12 schools, whether public, private, or church-affiliated, are eligible to apply to seminars and institutes. All teachers selected to participate in a seminar or institute will be awarded a stipend of $2,800, $3,250, or $3,700 (depending on the length of the seminar or institute) to help cover travel costs, books and other research expenses, and living expenses. How to Apply Please send or e-mail a request for application information and expanded project descriptions to the seminar and institute directors listed here. When doing so, please include your regular mailing address since directors may send application material through the mail. You may request information about as many projects as you like, but you may apply to no more than one project. The application deadline is March 1, 2004 (postmark). Title: Chaplin Award for Excellence in Japanese Language Teaching
Body: From: "Mari Noda" Please encourage those who qualify to apply to CHAPLIN MEMORIAL AWARD for excellence in Japanese language teaching. Mari Noda The Hamako Ito Chaplin Memorial Award will again be conferred in 2004, administered through the Association for Asian Studies. In accordance with the wishes of the Chaplin family, each year a prize of $1000 will be awarded to either a current graduate student or a full-time instructor of Japanese for excellence in Japanese language teaching. A full-time instructor who has completed graduate study within the last 3 years in an area that directly involves Japanese language teaching is eligible. Possible academic fields of specialization are Japanese language pedagogy, linguistics, anthropology, or literature. Current graduate students must demonstrate their intention to enter the teaching field in a North American university. Professor Mari Noda of the Ohio State University serves as Chair of the Selection Committee, Professor David Howell of Princeton University serves as representative of the Northeast Asia Council of AAS for the committee, and Professor George Chaplin serves ex-officio.
