Title: Integrating Technology in the Foreign Language Classroom
Body: From: Integrating Technology in the Foreign Language Classroom http://www.cortland.edu/flteach/mm-course/digital-portfolios. Jean LeLoup & Bob Ponterio SUNY Cortland © 2003 Electronic Portfolios for Foreign Language Teachers A portfolio for foreign language that is standards-based and performance-based will present student work that illustrates how the student has met the standards. There are many different possible kinds of portfolios; we will propose here a reflective portfolio intended to represent student performance in meeting the standards. Digital technology offers the possibility of creating electronic portfolios for alternative assessment. A major advantage of digital portfolios for the foreign language classroom is that student performance may be recorded in audio and video formats in a medium that is much easier to store, view, copy, and distribute than are the traditional media of audio and video tape. Why should a portfolio be standards-based? Dr. Helen Barrett proposes "that a portfolio without standards is just a multimedia presentation or a fancy electronic resume or a digital scrapbook." (Electronic Portfolios and Standards, 1998) Indeed, if the standards form the basis of our learning goals, then should also be the basis of the assessment.
