Body: From: "Anselmo Villanueva" CONTACT: Rolando Rodriguez, Jr. (202) 543-1771 ext. 242 (202) 703-371-1489 (cellular) CHCI Applications for 2004 Congressional Internship, 2004-05 Public Policy Fellowship and 2004 Scholarship Awards Now Available The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, the nation's leading bi-partisan Hispanic educational organization, has made available applications for its prestigious 2004 Congressional Summer Internship, 2004-05 Public Policy Fellowship and 2004 Scholarship Awards benefiting Latino youth. The applications can be accessed online by visiting www.chciyouth.org or by contacting the Institute at 1-800.EXCEL.DC. Application deadlines are January 31, 2004 for the internship; March 1, 2004 for the fellowship; and April 15, 2004 for the scholarship. The Summer Internship Program selects 30 promising Latino undergraduates for an eight-week internship in the nation's capital. While in Washington, DC interns work in Congressional offices. The Fellowship program offers up to 20 promising Latinos nationwide the opportunity to gain hands-on experience at the national level in the public policy area of their choice. The nine-month fellowship gives participants the opportunity to work in such areas as international affairs, economic development, education policy, housing or corporate affairs. CHCI awards scholarships to Latino students from the fifty U.S. states and Puerto Rico who have a history of performing public and/or community service activities in their communities. Recipients receive a one-time scholarship of $2,500 to attend a four-year or graduate-level academic institution or $1,000 to attend a two-year community college. CHCI, a non-profit and non-partisan 501(c)(3) organization, provides educational programs for Hispanic college and postgraduate students. This position is a tenure track appointment to begin in fall, 2004. This position in Teacher Research and Literacy/ELL Education will be in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the Graduate College of Education. We seek candidates who can contribute to innovative teaching, research, service, and program development with the Teacher Education and Critical and Creative Thinking graduate programs, particularly in the areas of Teacher Research, reflective action research, literacy development, and culturally responsive instruction with English Language Learners at the middle/secondary level. The Graduate College of Education is NCATE accredited. Responsibilities will include graduate teaching; engagement in an active research program; participation in democratic governance of the program; service at the college, university, and professional levels. Qualifications: Ed.D. or Ph.D. in a related field, evidence of an active research agenda, and substantial K-12 classroom/school-based experience is expected. Higher education experience in urban public institutions is desirable. Candidates with bilingual expertise and/or interdisciplinary ethnic studies training with relevance for middle/secondary school context are especially encouraged to apply. Body: From: "sm167" Assistant Professor in Urban Leadership - Job Number: 610a, Closing Date: Open until filled, Official Title: Assistant Professor in Urban Leadership Description The Department of Leadership in Education seeks an assistant professor in school leadership to teach research methods and other courses in the doctoral program in Leadership in Urban Schools (LIUS). The Educational Leadership Department is composed of the LIUS Program, a companion doctoral track in Higher Education Administration, and the M.Ed./CAGS/Certification Program in K-12 Educational Administration. The LIUS Program provides mid-career, working professionals - teachers, administrators, and others committed to transforming urban schools - with opportunities to develop knowledge, skills, and practices in pursuit of that commitment. Graduates are viewed as change agents who understand how organizations are rooted in social, cultural, political, economic, and historical contexts and are able to create viable projects through research, field experiences, and action plans for change. LIUS is an eight-year old Ed.D. program with approximately 60 students in annual cohorts of 10-12. While attending, students continue to work full time as teachers, administrators, counselors, and other types of educational leaders. Courses are offered in the evening, on Saturdays, and in a three-week institute in July. The curriculum concentrates on three strands: leadership, research skills, and multicultural approaches to the urban context. The ideal candidate will have expertise in both quantitative research and mixed methods (e.g., survey design, case study, program evaluation, and/or secondary data analysis). The candidate will be able to teach successfully a two-semester Research Methods survey course, to advise a range of dissertation methodologies, and to function as part of a faculty team responsible for the programs curriculum development, advising, and long-term planning. Expertise in complementary areas such as leadership, policy, or urban issues and experience in K-12 urban education is preferred. Responsibilities will include graduate teaching of two courses per semester; dissertation advising; engagement in an active research/publishing program; and participation in democratic governance of the program and service at the college, university, and professional levels.
