Title: 2009 Language Teaching for Proficiency Workshop
Body: From http://www.oregonoic.org/ltp.htm All second-language teachers, current and prospective, are invited to the Oregon International Council’s Language Teaching for Proficiency workshop series, a unique program designed to help transform language learning from an academic exercise to a performance skill. The 2009 workshop series will take place on five Saturdays: January 24, February 21, March 14, April 18 and May 16, at Clackamas Community College. Principal instructor will be Anne Mueller, the experienced master-teacher who has conducted this program since initiating it in 1998. Participants will discuss principles and practices involved in teaching to National and State second language performance standards, and will develop classroom applications of the ideas examined, for review with colleagues and the instructor. As part of our mission to serve the development and enhancement of Asian language in the United States, the University of Hawai‘i National Foreign Language Resource Center will offer 2 concurrent two-week intensive language courses in Chinese and Japanese. The intensive courses, delivered entirely over the World Wide Web using a tested and proven pedagogic model, focus on the development and/or maintenance of communicative language skills at the Advanced level, with strong emphasis on written communication meeting high standards of literacy. Title: NEA Foundation Accepting Applications Learning & Leadership Grants
Body: NEA Foundation’s Learning & Leadership Grants Deadline: February 1, 2009; June 1, 2009; and October 15, 2009 The NEA Foundation supports a variety of efforts by teachers, education support professionals, and higher education faculty and staff to improve student learning in public schools, colleges, and universities across the United States. The Learning & Leadership Grants program provides opportunities for teachers, education support professionals, and higher education faculty and staff to engage in high-quality professional development and lead their colleagues in professional growth. Grants to individuals fund participation in professional development experiences such as summer institutes and action research. Grants to groups fund collegial study, including study groups, action research, lesson study, and mentoring experiences for faculty or staff new to an assignment. The grant amount is $2,000 for individuals and $5,000 for groups. Applicants must be practicing U.S. public school teachers in grades K-12, public school education support professionals, or faculty and staff at public higher education institutions. This policy seems directly related to the "colorblind" attitude that we teachers are encouraged to take: Ignore racial and cultural differences, otherwise you could be perceived as racist. Treat everyone the same. But not everyone is the same. Being "colorblind" does not recognize the differences in experiences students bring that affect their education. This is not to say we should support stereotypes by expecting certain student groups to perform in certain ways — all students are individuals that have the ability to succeed. By Leah Wilner The Joint National Committee on Languages (JNCL) is a non profit, member-based organization with the goal of educating the public about foreign and international language education. One of the main missions of the JNCL is to gather information about foreign language education and then send out this information and make it easily accessible to their sixty-five member organizations. This organization acts as a liaison between the international and foreign language communities and Congress, although it does not participate in any advocating. The findings probably apply to other waves of immigrant groups of the late 1800s and early 1900s, Salmons said. Other research shows that Latino immigrants in more recent decades are learning English quickly and that, by the third generation, speak only English. "A lot of the stereotypes apply much better to German immigrants of the 19th century than they do to the Mexican immigrants in the Southwest today," said Salmons, a German professor.
