Title: Article: Testing Change Raises Scores of ELL Students
Body: From http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/27/AR2008082701813.html Testing Change Raises Scores: Va. Assesses Those Learning English On Class Work By Michael Alison Chandler and Maria Glod August 28, 2008 A switch in testing for students who are learning English fueled a rebound in scores this year for immigrant-rich schools in Northern Virginia that had failed the year before to meet targets set under the federal No Child Left Behind law. Scores dipped last year when the federal government for the first time required Virginia school systems to give English learners the same reading tests as classmates who speak English fluently, a mandate that local educators vehemently opposed as unfair. This year, federal officials allowed the state to assess thousands of English-learning students through portfolios of their work over the school year instead of through the state reading test. The results announced yesterday marked another turn in the national debate over the best way to test millions of students who are new to English. Title: Book Donation Campaign
Body: The Department of Education teamed with First Book and Random House Children's Books to launch the 2008 Summer Reading Initiative (http://www.ed.gov/news/pressreleases/2008/05/05062008.html ). The Initiative marked the first stage of a national distribution of over 850,000 free, new Random House children's books to schools, libraries and literacy organizations serving low-income youth across the country. Some 500,000 books were distributed in this first stage of the initiative. The effort is part of our Book Donation Campaign, a multiyear effort of the U.S. Department of Education, First Book and a host of major U.S. book publishing companies to promote literacy and supply books to children in need. Since June 2006, we have collaborated to distribute nearly 3 million children's books to schools, libraries and literacy organizations serving low-income youth across the country. Later this month, the Department and First Book will announce the availability and subsequent national distribution of the remaining 300,000 Random House books earmarked for the Book Donation Campaign. Schools, libraries and organizations interested in obtaining books available through the Campaign are encouraged to register online at www.firstbook.org/register .

Title: Stirrers and Settlers for the Primary Classroom
Body: Stirrers and Settlers for the Primary Classroom Written by Sue Clarke, Teacher and teacher-trainer, British Council, Coimbra, Portugal Teaching in the primary classroom is very different from teaching teens or adults because of the amount of energy children have! Knowing how to channel this energy, or when to ‘stir' and when to ‘settle' children will help you achieve balanced lessons without children becoming overexcited on the one hand or bored on the other. A list of “stirrer” and “settler” activities is available along in the full article at http://teachingenglish.org.uk/think/articles/stirrers-settlers-primary-classroom .

Title: Curriki: Curriculum Sharing for K-12
Body: From http://www.eschoolnews.com/news/site-of-the-week/site/?i=55031;_hbguid=dce3dd24-c83c-42e8-ac1c-72fabb620143&d=site-of-the-week Curriki, an online community for creating and sharing open K-12 curricula, has redesigned its web site to make it easier for educators to use. In addition, Curriki has expanded its offering of free curricula with a new educational program, Panwapa, from Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind Sesame Street, in partnership with the Merrill Lynch Foundation. Panwapa, which in the Tshiluba language of the Congo means "here on this earth," is a collection of educational resources designed to introduce and model the skills needed for global citizenship. The newly redesigned Curriki web site features an easy-to-use home page that gives users three ways to become an active member of the community. Users can "Find" open-source curricula and educational materials, "Contribute" their own high-quality content, and "Connect" through Groups with other educators and learners. New tutorial videos and tips offer additional support, helping members find the information they need faster and easier, Curriki says. Further improvements reportedly will be phased in over the next several months, including the ability to generate a collection of free educational resources in a format easily suitable for printing. Foreign language learning resources (2815 to date) are available at http://www.curriki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/GWTSearch#XWiki.AssetClass.fw_items=FW_masterFramework.ForeignLanguages&__advShow=1&__go=1 and searchable by subject, level, language, and more. To learning more about Panwapa at Curriki, go to http://www.curriki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Demo/panwapa . Panwapa World is available at http://www.panwapa.com/panwapasplash.php .
