Content-based instruction (CBI) is the integration of selected content with language teaching aims. Applicable to both ESL and EFL instructional settings, CBI is a flexible approach that is constantly evolving. This seminar provides descriptions of current models of CBI, discusses the similarities and differences between CBI and ESP, and presents several case studies of CBI implemented in both ESL and EFL classes. In this seminar, participants consider

* how the models may be implemented with adolescent through adult learners
* which proficiency levels are most appropriate for CBI
* which issues and challenges exist to effective implementation
* what outcomes can be expected in terms of student learning and motivation
