Title: New Book: Frequency Effects in Language Acquisition
Body: From http://www.degruyter.de/cont/fb/sp/detailEn.cfm?id=IS-9783110196719-1 Frequency Effects in Language Acquisition Edited by Insa Gülzow, Insa and Natalia Gagarina Publisher: de Gruyter Summary: The book addresses a controversial current topic in language acquisition studies: the impact of frequency on linguistic structure in child language. The role of input frequency in the acquisition process is evaluated in a large variety of languages, topics and the two major theoretical frameworks: UG-based and usage-based accounts. While most papers report a clear frequency effect, different factors that may be interacting with pure statistical effects are critically assessed. Title: New Book: Japan's Built-in Lexicon of English-based Loanwords
Body: From http://www.multilingual-matters.com/multi/display.asp?isb=9781847690302&TAG=&CID= Japan's Built-in Lexicon of English-based Loanwords by Frank E. Daulton Publisher: Multilingual Matters Summary: Japan offers a prime example of lexical borrowing which relates to language transfer in second and foreign language learning. The insights gained by examining language borrowing in Japan can be applied wherever language contact has occurred and foreign languages are learned. Many of the most important English vocabulary may already exist in native lexicons. This book examines Japanese lexical borrowing, clarifies the effect of cognates on foreign language acquisition, assesses Japanese cognates that correspond to high-frequency and academic English, and discusses using this resource in teaching. It includes extensive lists of loanword cognates. Visit the publisher’s website at http://www.multilingual-matters.com/multi/display.asp?isb=9781847690302&TAG=&CID= .
