Title: Course Offering: University of Victoria (BC) -- Immersion Language Teaching for Aboriginal Languages
Body: The Aboriginal Language Revitalization program, a partnership between the University of Victoria and the En’owkin centre in Penticton is proud to announce the following 6-day learning opportunity: Methods for Immersion Language Teaching and Learning LING 187: Special Topics in Aboriginal Language Revitalization, 1.5 Units Dates: March 3 – 8, 2008 Location: En’owkin Centre, Penticton, BC Immersion formats create highly effective environments in which endangered aboriginal languages can be taught and learned. This six-day intensive course for language teachers and others involved in language preservation and revitalization work, provides an introduction to immersion teaching and learning principles and techniques, and explores three practical immersion methods in order to create a foundation for practical applications in a variety of situations and programs. Topics include the nature of full immersion in real world learning, and modifications required for delivery within structured delivery environment. Title: National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminars and Institutes
Body: Each year the National Endowment for the Humanities offers teachers opportunities to study humanities topics in a variety of Summer Seminars and Institutes. Seminars and Institutes are 2-6 week projects which take place in the United States and abroad. Full-time teachers in American K-12 schools, whether public, private, or church-affiliated, as well as home-schooling parents, are eligible to apply to seminars and institutes. All teachers selected to participate in a seminar or institute will be awarded a fixed stipend based on the length of the seminar or institute to help cover travel costs, books and other research expenses, and living expenses: $1,800 (2 weeks), $2,400 (3 weeks), $3,000 (4 weeks), $3,600 (5 weeks), or $4,200 (6 weeks). Title: Job: Director - Penn Language Center
Body: The School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) is the liberal arts core of the University of Pennsylvania. SAS is the academic home to over half of Penn's students and provides 60 percent of the courses taken by students in Penn's undergraduate professional schools. SAS seeks a Director to coordinate the language program of the Penn Language Center (PLC). The PLC offers instruction in approximately forty less- commonly taught languages, coordinating language programs and training for language teachers. The PLC also provides leadership and training in the use of new technologies in language instruction for all language teachers in the School. In partnership with faculty, the PLC is a center for externally-funded programs in language-related research projects. Duties: Hire, train, and evaluate PLC teachers; plan curricula; consult with departments and other schools within the University; and conduct workshops for language teachers. Design programs in language pedagogy and second language acquisition using new technologies for teachers in the PLC and other languages and literatures departments. Oversee the PLC staff and budget. This is a Limited Service position which means that although this is an ongoing position the incumbent works 10 out of 12 months in a year. Qualifications: Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, or a language- related discipline. Experience as a language coordinator. Experience in the development and implementation of language teaching technology. Minimum one year of administrative or supervisory experience. Body: From http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/347601_international17.html Language-immersion elementary school coming to South End Young students to learn Mandarin or Spanish By CAROL SMITH January 16, 2008 Building on the popularity of the John Stanford International School, Seattle Public Schools will start a second international elementary school for students wishing to become bilingual. The district plans to announce Thursday that Beacon Hill Elementary will be designated an international school offering immersion or partial immersion programs in Spanish and Mandarin as well as an English-immersion program for non-English speaking students. The programs will start next fall. "There's been a huge demand in the last couple of years for Mandarin," said Kelly Aramaki, principal of John Stanford Elementary in Wallingford, which offers immersion programs in Spanish and Japanese. Aramaki has been involved in the development of the Beacon Hill program. "We're thrilled to have it," he said. SALPAT provides a space for faculty teaching the languages of South Asia to discuss and analyze the latest theories and/or practices in the field of second language acquisition studies. The journal also features articles on the use of the technology in language teaching. This journal is peer-refereed, and its Editorial Board is comprised of experts in South Asian and other languages and in fields as diverse as technology, applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, theoretical linguistics and heritage language issues.
