Title: Southern California TPRS Training in August
Body: Carol Gaab will be giving a 2 day workshop on August 28th and 29th in Anaheim Hills, California. Anyone interested in joining us is welcome to do so. The project is focused on creating a computer delivered test that will be accessible to ELLs with a grade level understanding of science knowledge and practices, but with limited abilities to demonstrate their understanding on conventional science tests developed for native English speaking students. The successful candidate will contribute a solid work or educational background in science (chemistry, biology, or earth and space science) and elementary or secondary education to a team comprised of other science specialists, educators, linguists, Web designers, and test measurement specialists. Michael Clara is a member of a State Office of Education committee examining standards for teachers to earn an endorsement, or extra credentials, to educate students learning English. In his federal complaint, he says the state wants to give kindergarten- through third-grade teachers a shortcut to those credentials by lumping it with a reading endorsement. He fears the state's Reading for English Language Learners plan would lower the quality of education those children receive. The immersion program at the Becker Elementary School, YALLA (Young American Learning Languages Activities), is an excellent model of teaching Arabic. The program began in 1994 and the design of the program included 50% instruction in English and 50% in Arabic. The nine-year review of the program which included classroom observation, parent and teacher surveys and interviews, and data on the students’ academic achievement in pre-kindergarten through fifth grades shows great academic results in both languages.
