Title: Conference: Language Learning and Teaching in Multilingual and Multicultural Contexts
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/18/18-486.html A one–day, international, English-French bilingual conference entitled 'Language Learning and Teaching in Multilingual and Multicultural Contexts' will be held October 6, 2007 at the American University of Paris (AUP) in Paris, France. AUP, with a student body that represents approximately one hundred nationalities and a vast array of first, second, and third languages, will serve as a natural meeting place for individuals interested in research on second language acquisition and pedagogy in linguistically diverse settings. Whether "natural" or "institutional", such settings provide both a challenge and an opportunity for scholars and practitioners alike. The challenge lies in understanding the processes involved in how adults learn a non-native language in such a linguistically diverse environment and in identifying how to more efficiently and effectively teach our students a non-native language given the variety of languages and cultures involved. The opportunity lies in the growing awareness of and interest in our world's multilingual and multicultural landscapes. The goal of this conference is to discuss and build upon current research conducted in these areas. For more information, go to http://linguistlist.org/issues/18/18-486.html .

Title: State Board of Pennsylvania Decides Not to Require Foreign Languages
Body: From http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07176/796928-298.stm State board refuses to require foreign language studies because of high cost Monday, June 25, 2007 By Eleanor Chute To meet the needs of today's global economy, some states are now requiring that all students learn a foreign language. But Pennsylvania has decided that such a mandate would be "irresponsible," because it would cost too much and because there are too few certified foreign language instructors, said state board of education Chairman Karl Girton. After years of debate, the board last month voted to drop a proposal that would have required all students to have at least survival skills in a modern foreign language or meet other standards in a classical one. Title: Multilingual Day Care in the Washington DC Area
Body: From http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/06/23/AR2007062301390.html?hpid=topnews Nap Time and Playtime And Time to Learn Farsi By Delphine Schrank Sunday, June 24, 2007 In Ashburn, Cenna Cripe, 21 months, will pucker up on cue, but only if her English-speaking mother, Christie, says "hati bossa" -- an Arabic request for a kiss. And in Annandale, Sasha Geisinger, 2, disappointed her mother somewhat when one of the first words out of her mouth was "dudu." Then Narra Geisinger learned that Sasha was using the Urdu word for milk. Children such as these in the polyglot Washington region often surprise their parents with language feats learned in day care. The large number of foreign-born care providers in the area enables many parents to kick-start their children's knowledge of a second or even a third language from among a growing babel that includes Arabic, Farsi, Urdu, Pashto, Hindi and Amharic, in addition to French and Spanish. Title: Article: Americans Wish They Knew More Languages
Body: From http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070621/NATION/706210390/1026/SCHOOLS Americans wish they knew more languages Americans say in poll they wish they had taken more classes while in school. Thomas Hargrove and Guido H. Stempel III Thursday, June 21, 2007 Don't remember much of the French you took in high school? You're not alone. Nearly two-thirds of Americans wish they'd taken more foreign language instruction while they were in high school, according to a survey of 1,010 adults conducted by Scripps Howard News Service and Ohio University. Adults are generally satisfied with the amount of mathematics and science they received, but the survey found a widespread longing for more foreign language skills. Americans are "at the bottom" of the world in terms of knowing foreign languages, according to Bret Lovejoy, executive director of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
