Ruben Hinojosa (D-TX), chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee's Subcommittee on Higher Education, Lifelong Learning and Competitiveness, has introduced H.R. 2214 to greatly enhance adult education and ESL services, and is looking for co-sponsors in Congress. Called the Adults Achieving the American Dream Act, this legislation will: *Increase the authorization for programs under the Adult and Family Literacy Act to $1.2 billion by fiscal year 2013 *Authorize the set-aside for integrated English literacy and civics programs in the Adult and Family Literacy Act *Increase the authorization for Even Start Family Literacy programs to $500 million *Dedicate a research and development center to adult education and literacy at the Institute for Education Sciences *Offer tax incentives to employers who offer adult education and ESL programs to their employees. "With no foreign language education currently available in local elementary schools, the UCA Community Language School aims to fill an educational gap by providing children with instruction appropriate to their level of development," said Dr. Phillip Bailey, Chair of the UCA Department of World Languages. Central Arkansas children will be able to learn Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish through language lessons offered in Irby Hall on the UCA campus. Classes will be designed to meet the needs of younger students, with groupings for children in kindergarten through second grade, third and fourth grades, fifth through seventh grades, and seventh and eighth grades. Body: From http://www.aatg.org/content/view/394/1 For the first time, the USA is planning to participate in the Internationale Deutscholympiade, through a competition sponsored by the Internationaler Deutschlehrerverband (IDV), Goethe-Institut, and AATG. The Internationale Deutscholympiade has been held for several years but without the participation of students from the USA. Now you have the opportunity to get your students involved! Students must be 16 or older by Dec. 31, 2007; students may be seniors graduating in 2008. Applications must be received by the coordinator of this program, Gert Wilhelm of the Chicago Goethe-Institut, by September 15, 2007. The national preliminary round will be held by invitation in Chicago from November 12-13, 2007, and the international finals will be held in Dresden, Germany, July 23-August 4, 2008.
