Title: Article: Teaching Learning Strategies
Body: From http://www.arabick12.org/profdev/articles.html#2 Teaching Learning Strategies By Dr. Wafa Hassan, The George Washington University Learning strategies are ways of thinking and analyzing that the student uses to understand his or her learning process. A successful teacher is one who uses different methods to convey lessons, such as audio, visual, and sensory methods, in order to attract the students' attention and to assist them to receive the knowledge from different sensory channels. The effective learning strategies that are used in language learning are divided into two parts: (1) Prior knowledge strategies and (2) strategies that depend on the task. The prior knowledge strategies are the ones that could be applied to different tasks and are based on the learner's perception of his or her way of learning and method of thinking. On the other hand, strategies for educational purposes are different, because they depend on the task for which they are being used and the availability of the resources. Title: New Digest: Foreign Language Immersion Programs: Features and Trends Over 35 Years
Body: From http://www.cal.org/resources/digest/index.html Foreign Language Immersion Programs: Features and Trends Over 35 Years By Ashley Lenker and Nancy Rhodes, Center for Applied Linguistics 2007 Foreign language immersion programs, first introduced in the United States in 1971 as a way to incorporate intensive second language education into public elementary schools, have gradually spread across the country and are now viewed by educators and parents as a highly effective way of teaching foreign languages to children (Curtain & Dahlberg, 2004). Foreign language immersion is an approach to teaching another language that involves immersing students in the target language throughout the school day. Teachers speak only the target language to teach academic subjects, using a wide range of instructional strategies. The ultimate goal of this type of program is for students to become proficient in the target language in addition to English, and to develop increased cultural awareness while reaching a high level of academic achievement (Fortune & Tedick, 2003). To read the entire article, which includes data on immersion programs in each state, different program models, trends in immersion education, and recommendations for growth of immersion programs, go to http://www.cal.org/resources/digest/flimmersion.html .
