Principles of Testing and Assessment (August 13 to 17, 2007)

Offered by the Language Acquisition Resource Center (LARC) at SDSU

This workshop is designed to assist instructors and administrators in planning, implementing and evaluating assessments. Basic concepts will be covered, such as

* Types of tests and interpretative paradigms;
* Some important concepts;
* Planning how to conduct testing for a particular purpose;
* Creating tasks (points to keep in mind, things to avoid, common problems, etc);
* Scoring methods;
* Quantitative analyses: the basics;
* Performing and interpreting item analyses in Excel;
* Calculating & interpreting reliability/dependability;

There will be lectures and break-out sections with additional facilitators. There will be one core group for less commonly taught languages in Latin America. We will form the break-out sections according to language and needs. Participants are encouraged to bring test material with them. We will use lab facilities to create audio-visual material. In groups we will compare evaluations of actual test performance.
