Title: New Book: Australian Sign Language (Auslan)
Body: From http://www.cambridge.org/us/catalogue/catalogue.asp?isbn=9780521540568 Australian Sign Language (Auslan): An introduction to sign language linguistics By Trevor Johnston Publisher: Cambridge University Press This is first comprehensive introduction to the linguistics of Auslan, the sign language of Australia. Assuming no prior background in language study, it explores each key aspect of the structure of Auslan, providing an accessible overview of its grammar (how sentences are structured), phonology (the building blocks of signs), morphology (the structure of signs), lexicon (vocabulary), semantics (how meaning is created), and discourse (how Auslan is used in context). The authors also discuss a range of myths and misunderstandings about sign languages, provide an insight into the history and development of Auslan, and show how Auslan is related to other sign languages, such as those used in Britain, the USA and New Zealand. Complete with clear illustrations of the signs in use and useful further reading lists, this is an ideal resource for anyone interested in Auslan, as well as those seeking a clear, general introduction to sign language linguistics. Title: Call for Papers: Workshop on Second Language Acquisition, United Kingdom
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/18/18-1315.html Workshop on Second Language Acquisition and Spatial Language Date: 10-Sep-2007 - 10-Sep-2007 Location: Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom Spatial language, such as asking directions for places in large scale space, or asking where a misplaced object is in small scale space, constitutes part of the basic fabric of language. Research into spatial language has recently been a hotbed of activity, including much work showing that languages vary greatly in how they carve up space. Furthermore, it is often noted by researchers and practitioners in second language learning that spatial language, and spatial adpositions in particular, present a particular challenge for the second language learner. The focus of this workshop will be to bring together work on SLA and spatial language with a view to characterizing the processes and constraints that affect the acquisition of L2 in this important domain. Attendance is free of charge and contributions to the workshop will be collected into a special issue of a journal or a book. Submissions are now invited for oral presentation slots and poster presentation slots. The oral presentations will be 20 minutes in length including (including 5 minutes for questions). There are 9 presentation slots available, and 15 poster slots. Call Deadline: 01-Jun-2007 More information available at http://www.cocolab.org/esla .

Title: Call for Presentations: Post-Graduate Conference in ELT and Linguistics, Ankara, Turkey
Body: From http://www.fedu.metu.edu.tr/pstgrd/index.html The 5th Post-Graduate Conference in ELT and Linguistics will be held on September 20-21, 2007, at the Department of Foreign Language Education, Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey. As graduate students, novice researchers and young academics, we conduct research for the MA and PhD courses through our graduate education. However, very few of these studies are shared, discussed or published. The aim of our conference is to provide a friendly platform for the presentation of postgraduate research and to learn from each other’s study. With this intention, we call for papers and workshops to promote discussion in ELT and Linguistics through our research. We would like to gather the prospective academicians of the coming years to share our individual contribution to the field and raise our awareness of what colleagues are doing in different regions of Turkey and the world. Deadline for submissions: June 1, 2007. More information available at http://www.fedu.metu.edu.tr/pstgrd/index.html .
