Title: New Report: Para Nuestros Niños: Expanding and Improving Early Education for Hispanics
Body: From http://www.ncela.gwu.edu/newsline/archives/2007/03/new_report_para.html The National Task Force on Early Childhood Education for Hispanics, established in 2004 to study the challenges to academic achievement for Hispanic children, has released a report that analyzes data from a large national sample of children from kindergarten through fifth grade. The study, "Para Nuestros Niños: Expanding and Improving Early Education for Hispanics," found that, despite extensive efforts since the mid-1980s to raise their academic achievement, Hispanic students continue to achieve at much lower levels than Whites across the K-5 years. The report's principle findings include: Hispanic children started kindergarten well behind White youngsters on measures of reading and math skills; although they gained some ground over the K-5 years, Hispanic children were still well behind in reading and math at the end of the fifth grade; and achievement differences between Hispanics and Whites across the K-5 years were closely associated with differences in social class. The report concludes by making several recommendations to state governments and the federal government, as well as private foundations, Hispanic organizations, and education researchers, outlining the actions needed to expand and improve educational opportunities for young Hispanic children. Title: Article: California Launches New ELL Assessment
Body: From http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2007/03/28/29ell.h26.html? California Launches New ELL Assessment By Mary Ann Zehr March 28, 2007 California schools began this month to administer a new assessment in Spanish for English-language learners, but the test will not be used for accountability purposes under the No Child Left Behind Act. Deb Sigman, the assessment director for the California Department of Education, said the state board of education would have to authorize the state to use a Spanish-language test to calculate adequate yearly progress for some English-language learners under the federal education law. “It’s kind of up in the air because the No Child Left Behind Act will be reauthorized at some point,” she said. “We don’t know what that reauthorization will look like and what will be called for in terms of native-language assessments.” Read the entire article at http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2007/03/28/29ell.h26.html? .

After entering their vocabulary words, students are presented with three study methods: the flashcard method; a configurable test page that includes written, matching, multiple-choice, and true-false questions; and a specialized "learn" mode that tracks the user's knowledge of individual words and retests the user only on unlearned words. The site also features a live chat box for discussing vocabulary usage with other students, the ability to import information from other web sites and documents, and the ability to combine word sets.
