Topics will include design of standards-based curricula and lessons, proficiency-oriented methods, the use of communicative tasks, form-focused instruction, and the presentation of Chinese structures in the cultural context. Technology that facilitates the effectiveness of these methods will be explored, including equipment and software appropriate for CFL instruction, teaching/learning activities that can be created with currently available digital tools, and how the tools can be shaped to fit a particular level or purpose. Participants will design proficiency-oriented lessons for their classes, using audio and visual tools such as PowerPoint, Quia, Audacity, and other free on-line resources, to meet their objectives. Body: From http://www.indiana.edu/~celcar/jobopps.php The Center for Languages of the Central Asian Region at Indiana University has three job openings: The Assistant Director will assist in communicating with funding agencies including writing reports and updating them on the Center’s progress and strategic goals. The Assistant Director will also represent the Center at professional conferences. S/he will have a Masters degree or Ph.D. (preferred) in Central Asian studies, language education, applied linguistics or similar. Knowledge of at least one Central Asian language preferred. Review of applications will begin February 28, 2007. The Language Pedagogist should be familiar with Central Asian languages and it is preferred that s/he have detailed knowledge of at least one. S/he will help coordinate a major new initiative in the development of proficiency standards for Central Asian languages. The Language Pedagogist will have at least a MA (Ph.D. preferred) in language education, linguistics, second language studies, or applied linguistics and will have second language/foreign language teaching experience. Review of applications will begin February 28, 2007. The Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) Specialist will provide in-house assistance and expertise in a wide variety of technical issues facing the Center as it seeks to develop multimedia web-based language materials and offer language instruction and training by interactive television. The ICT Specialist will have at least a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science and/or 2 years of experience in developing websites, databases or the like. Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/17/17-3427.html The Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL), a university-affiliated research center located at the University of Maryland, is seeking to recruit a senior scientist to direct its research efforts in the area of the linguistics of less commonly taught languages. The candidate will direct a team of descriptive, theoretical, and sociolinguists investigating a range of basic issues and applied problems related to the linguistic description of less commonly taught languages. Current projects include dialect identification and the description of the grammar, pragmatics and discourse structure of relevant languages. Additional projects that further CASL's mission will be developed consistent with the skills and interests of the researchers hired. Throughout the center, researchers drawn from linguistics, second language acquisition, cognitive and computer science, anthropology and sociology work in collaborative teams to aid government professionals in the improvement of their on the job performance or foreign language training. Candidates must have an earned Ph.D., possess a record of individual research achievement, a strong record of publication, and the ability to establish an interdisciplinary research program across areas related to the study of language and analysis of less commonly taught languages. Research administration experience and group management skills are strongly valued for this position. Appointments for this position are as research faculty members of the University of Maryland and carry the title of associate or senior research scientist, as appropriate. Title: ACTFL President Testifies Before Senate Subcommittee

This is a subcommittee of the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. The hearing was entitled “Lost in Translation: A Review of the Federal Government’s Efforts to Develop a Foreign Language Strategy” and was chaired by Senator Daniel Akaka (D-HI) with Senator George Voinovich (R-OH) as Ranking Minority Member. Rita appeared on a panel with Mr. Michael Petro of the Committee for Economic Development and Diane Birckbichler, Director of the Foreign Language Center at Ohio State University, (and also a past president of ACTFL). The Departments of Defense and Education, as well as the FBI testified on another panel. Rita’s testimony focused on ten recommendations for expanding and strengthening foreign language education in the U.S. and the need to focus federal funding on this effort. The school, the Khalil Gibran International Academy, is one of 40 new schools that the Department of Education is opening for the 2007-8 school year. It will serve grades 6 to 12 and will be in Brooklyn, although a specific location has not been determined. Debbie Almontaser, a 15-year veteran of the school system who is the driving force behind the school and will be its principal, said that ideally, the school would serve an equal mix of students with backgrounds in Arabic language and culture and those without such backgrounds.
