The Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL), a university-affiliated research center located at the University of Maryland, is seeking to recruit a senior scientist to direct its research efforts in the area of the linguistics of less commonly taught languages. The candidate will direct a team of descriptive, theoretical, and sociolinguists investigating a range of basic issues and applied problems related to the linguistic description of less commonly taught languages. Current projects include dialect identification and the description of the grammar, pragmatics and discourse structure of relevant languages. Additional projects that further CASL's mission will be developed consistent with the skills and interests of the researchers hired. Throughout the center, researchers drawn from linguistics, second language acquisition, cognitive and computer science, anthropology and sociology work in collaborative teams to aid government professionals in the improvement of their on the job performance or foreign language training.

Candidates must have an earned Ph.D., possess a record of individual research achievement, a strong record of publication, and the ability to establish an interdisciplinary research program across areas related to the study of language and analysis of less commonly taught languages. Research administration experience and group management skills are strongly valued for this position. Appointments for this position are as research faculty members of the University of Maryland and carry the title of associate or senior research scientist, as appropriate.
