Title: Computer Modules for Assessing Socio-Cultural Competence: Russian
Body: From http://clear.msu.edu/clear/store/moreinfo.php?product_ID=19 This free CD-ROM targets specific pragmatic aspects of Russian based on conversational exchanges between native speakers. The modules include photographs that help to establish a context for the exchanges. The modules focus on high frequency communicative functions such as: asking for directions, asking for permission, expressing preference, and giving compliments. Some possible uses for the modules are as: a part of a placement exam, a part of a comprehensive exit exam, a part of a course's instructional materials, a pre-departure assessment for study abroad students, and an overall evaluation of teaching assistant candidates. For more information and to download a disk image that can be burned to a CD-ROM, go to http://clear.msu.edu/clear/store/moreinfo.php?product_ID=19 .

Title: Resources for Teaching about Food in Spanish
Body: FLTEACH users have written the following ideas and resources for teaching a unit on food in Spanish: --- I use plastic food - I have a collection from my son's preschool days of various food items, plus pots, pans, plates and utensils. We do home meal situations and restaurant situations, and also review gustar and colors, since some of the plastic food has some interesting colors (the cabbage is REALLY purple, for example). Home meals you can recycle family vocab, too. I'll also just hand out various food items after giving the vocab and ask the class who has a certain thing - so they get to practice tener, too - or do commands and do things such as ask the person with the steak to give it to another student. Fleming, DJ. No Subject. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 23 Sept 2006). --- I came across this website that looks like it has lots of potential for a unit on food. http://www.fcps.edu/SandburgMS/dept/foreign_lang/mexico/index.htm Poquette, E. great website for Spanish teachers. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 31 Dec 2006). --- I divide the class in groups of 3. Each group picks a name for their restaurant and writes their own menu, with prices and all. They also make an ad to advertise their restaurant and they much write a 5-8 minute skit to either present to the class or videotape for the class to watch later. One of the students would play "el mesero" and the other 2 "los clientes". Then as a culmination of their activity each group brings one dish from their menu and we sample all of the dishes. Valdes, S. Re: menu/food. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 14 Jan 2007). --- Have them video-taped themselves preparing recipes in Spanish/ Create a skit and have them pretend they are in a Spanish restaurant/ Ask them to find recipes from all Latin American countries and have an international recipe book from all these countries. Include main dishes, salads, sweets, drinks, etc. Moubarek, M. Re: menu/food. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 14 Jan 2007). --- I like to talk about nutrition in the food unit. Surveys on eating habits, to determine who is not eating enough fruits or veggies are done. Students do a Venn diagram with the old and the new pyramid and they compare it and contrast it. Most of the nutrition terms are cognates colesterol, proteínas, carbohidratos, etc.... They create healthy daily menus for the class. I have activities A/B with calories per food items and calories for different sports, so they can figure out how much they need to exercise to burn what they ate, etc... Alonso-Post. D. Re: menu/food. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 14 Jan 2007). --- This link is great too! Students enter their info and print the dietary recommendations and they compare them in class to others. http://www.mypyramid.gov/mypyramid/sp-index.aspx Alonso-Post. D. Re: menu/food. Title: Crazy Love Story: An Online “Mad Libs” Model
Body: From http://garnet.acns.fsu.edu/~rgp6722/websites/Historia_de_Amor/index.htm Remember the “Mad Libs” games in which certain words are left blank, with a prompt for what part of speech goes in the blank? Here is a link to an online activity of this type in Spanish, just in time for Valentines Day. Unfortunately, the story only works for a male participant, but it is a good model for other such stories, and creating such an activity would also be a good class project to practice parts of speech. Available at http://garnet.acns.fsu.edu/~rgp6722/websites/Historia_de_Amor/index.htm .

Title: Website: The Forest of Rhetoric
Body: From http://humanities.byu.edu/rhetoric/silva.htm This online rhetoric, provided by Dr. Gideon Burton of Brigham Young University, is a guide to the terms of classical and renaissance rhetoric. Sometimes it is difficult to see the forest (the big picture) of rhetoric because of the trees (the hundreds of Greek and Latin terms naming figures of speech, etc.) within rhetoric. This site is intended to help beginners, as well as experts, make sense of rhetoric, both on the small scale (definitions and examples of specific terms) and on the large scale (the purposes of rhetoric, the patterns into which it has fallen historically as it has been taught and practiced for 2000+ years). If you'd like an overview of the entire "forest" (the subject) of rhetoric, consult the "trees" (major categories) in the left frame. If you'd like to look up specific terms of rhetoric, either scroll through the list of figures of speech (or "flowers" of rhetoric) on the right, or Search the Forest. Available at http://humanities.byu.edu/rhetoric/silva.htm .

Title: New Book: Realizing the Vision of Two-Way Immersion
Body: From http://calstore.cal.org/store/detail.aspx?ID=338 New book now available from the Center for Applied Linguistics! Realizing the Vision of Two-Way Immersion: Fostering Effective Programs and Classrooms by Elizabeth R. Howard & Julie Sugarman Publisher: Center for Applied Linguistics and Delta Systems Co., Inc. Two-way immersion programs are a distinctive form of dual language education in which native English speakers and speakers of another language (usually Spanish) are integrated for academic content instruction through both English and the partner language. The goals of such programs include the development of bilingualism, biliteracy, and cross-cultural competence in addition to grade-level performance, and a growing body of research indicates that the model is successful in helping students to attain these goals. At the same time, however, the extent to which students achieve these outcomes varies across schools, with many TWI practitioners unsure about the approaches that are likely to yield the best outcomes. Drawing on a decade of research, this new book by CAL researchers examines the development of bilingualism and biliteracy in elementary TWI students and demonstrates how fostering cultures of intellectualism, equity, and leadership can successfully promote these goals. This book is for anyone who wants to know more about effective TWI education. Order online at the CAL Store (http://calstore.cal.org/store/detail.aspx?ID=338 ).
