Brentwood’s students buck poverty trend: Community cooperation given the credit

Brentwood Elementary – also known as Brentwood Latin Grammar School – is one school that has found a way to be successful even with more than half its students living in poverty.

Nearly two-thirds of the school’s students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, yet 83 percent of students in the school passed the ISTEP+ exams. The school had the second-highest passing rate in Fort Wayne Community Schools.

It’s difficult for those involved with the school to pinpoint exactly what makes Brentwood different from other area schools.

They say it is a combination of dedicated teachers who work as a team and a network of parents and community members who support them. The most obvious differences about Brentwood – children wear uniforms and learn Latin – are not given as much credit for the school’s success.
