Title: More Help for the First Days of Class
Body: Here are a few more ideas to help you and your students set the pace for learning this year. ---- I greet them at the door, introduce myself (using cognates in target language)... We start learning phonetics/alphabet, greetings.... I give them a learning styles assessment; we do an icebreaker, watch a bit of video.... Blaz, D. Re: First Days of School. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (15 Aug. 2006). ---- Make a Scavenger Hunt/Search of your textbook to familiarize the students with the book. Jones, S. Re: First Days of School. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (16 Aug. 2006). ---- I have the students pick partners and get to know others in the class by making "dates" with each other...using a clock, they go around the room setting up dates for later on throughout the year...then on a given day, I will say, "today we are working with our 10:00 partner" .this way, they don't always work with the same person, or only their friends. This year, I am trying the same concept w/ countries of South America/Caribe.....this way, students also (hopefully) will learn all the countries in C. America while we're at it (or at least know that Spain is not there!!!) Giuliano, J. Re: First Days of School. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (15 Aug. 2006).

Title: Mix It Up with Maps
Body: Here are a couple of fun ways to facilitate pair work and ensure that students work with a variety of partners, while re-enforcing some basic concepts. ---- I've heard several people mention that at the beginning of the year, they give their students a worksheet with a clock or a daily schedule page. The students then find a partner for 1:00 and write the other person's name at 1:00; they are then "1:00" partners. They continue for the other hours. This way, the teacher can say, "Do this exercise with your 5:00 partner" (or whatever time) and it prevents the students from working with the same person over and over. I decided to try that this year, but with a twist: we did a geography lesson today, looking at the different francophone countries that we'll "visit" during the semester via the textbook. After the students identified the countries, they found a partner and wrote their names for some of the countries. Now, I can tell them to work with their Canadian partner or their Tahiti partner--and it will require them to look at the map regularly! (Last year, they had to identify countries on the final exam, and they did dreadfully--apparently Haiti is in Africa and Tahiti is next to Guadeloupe??? I want us to keep revisiting maps this time around.) Just thought I'd share that idea and thank the folks who suggested the clock activity! Dodson-Knight, S. Clock partners? Map partners! Title: German Alphabet Song
Body: I just sang something crazy with my level 1s today and they really got into it, despite everybody laughing like crazy. I teach high school, so I'm sure you know, you really gotta win them over sometimes. I don't know if this will work for you, but I "sang" the letters like a drill instructor would chant. ABCDEFG! (and they repeat) HIJKLMN! (repeated by them) OPQRSTU! (repeated) VWXYZ! (sounds like this: FOWVAYIX-IP-SI-LON ZET!) Hoer zu! Hoer zu! (they repeat after me) and then... Das ist jetzt das deutsche Alphabet! I had them marching around the classroom -- freshmen all the way up to seniors, and it was surprisingly funny -- they liked it, and it sort of "bonded" them.
