Title: More Graded Readers for Students of English (Part 3)
Body: Here are a few more sources of graded readers suggested by teachers of English ---- If you go to Renaissance Learning (Accelerated Reader) and do a search for Sweet Valley, you'll get a listing of 10 Sweet Valley books listed with their Accelerated Reader reading levels--anywhere from 3.1 to 6.1: Go to this website and click on order quizzes in the column on the left. http://www.renlearn.com Pfeifer, J. Re: ESL library readers - recommendations. Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list. TESL-L@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (13 June 2006). ---- Two I have had great success with are Green Angel by Alice Hoffman and Children of The River by Linda Crew. Green Angel is a well written metaphor about 9/11. The setting takes place in a time that mixes the agricultural lifestyle of the past with concerns of teens today. The vocabulary is not complex, but the themes of dealing with loss and alienation are. Though written by an American, Children of the River resonates with my Asian high school female students. The story of a Cambodian refugee who is the voice of her family, longs to see her parents again and struggles with her love for a blue eyed boy hits home. Flierl, R. Re: ESL library readers - recommendations. Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list. TESL-L@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (13 June 2006). ---- See Townsend Press http://www.townsendpress.com for a large collection at extremely reasonable prices. My adult Intermediate students have been enjoying the collection of stories in "Everyday Heroes." Bakin, B. Re: ESL library readers - recommendations. Title: Testimonial: High School German Comes in Handy
Body: Those of you who don't live in Wisconsin and can routinely tune into Wisconsin Public Radio's nationally syndicated "To the Best of Our Knowledge" series probably missed the program on professional wrestling this past weekend. There was a story told by Mick "Mankind" Foley about the time he was wrestling in Munich when his ear got cut off, no, not by another wrestler, but by being hurled against the ropes in the ring.... You don't want to know! In any event, as he was being taken to the hospital he had the presence of mind to use his high school German to tell the attending physicians - quote - "Vergessen Sie nicht, bitte, mein Ohr in der Plastiktasche zu bringen!" He added by saying that kids should take a foreign language in high school because you never know when it might come in handy. Yes, it's a bizarre testimonial, but I'm not complaining. You can access the whole segment by going to http://wpr.org, clicking on "To the Best of Our Knowledge" and following the links. The story about the Ohr in Muenchen is at approximately 12 minutes 30 seconds into the hour. Mick Foley tells it well and his German is pretty good for a wrestler with only high school language skills. You never know... James, C. [AATG-L] Vergessen Sie bitte nicht das Ohr. Title: New Regulations under IDEA
Body: The U.S. Department of Education has released the new regulations for Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The final regulations are intended to further the goal that no child - including each and every one of America's students with disabilities - is left behind. The Department has prepared a user-friendly Web site to help guide the public through these changes: http://www.ed.gov/policy/speced/guid/idea/idea2004.html . In addition to the actual text of the regulations, the site includes an analysis of the public's comments, a summary of the major changes since publication of the proposed regulations, and several appendices, including an index and additional guidance for implementing the regulations. A fact sheet on the new regulations can be found at http://www.ed.gov/admins/lead/speced/ideafactsheet.html . Special education regulations released. U.S. Department of Education ‘s Teacher Initiative. Teachers@westat.com (24 Aug. 2006).

Title: Cognate Story Eases (Re-)Introduction into German
Body: Somebody recently asked about easy stories for starting in German; I was happy to see that somebody in reply mentioned the little old graded reader, book 1, "Allerlei", by Peter Hagboldt, which I was going to suggest. I found a file from last year that I had copied from a Web site that contained much or perhaps all of Allerlei, put on the Web by Dr. Ronald C. Warner, Professor of German, Ball State University, who also apparently 'didacticized' it with notes and questions. The link still works: http://www.bsu.edu/csh/languages/program/facpages/lesestof.htm I still remember the way even graduate students', who had to take a crash course to pass a test in German, eyes lit up with happy amazement when they started reading Allerlei. Title: Classroom Expressions Poster and Handout Online
Body: Although these student aids were created for use in Spanish classrooms, they could easily be modified for use with any language. ---- I have posted a Classroom Expressions and Commands Student Help Sheet on my site. I used to have a plain list that I allowed students to keep out on their desks for the first part of the school year so that they could use as much Spanish as possible. This new help sheet that I received from a listserv member (D. McCormack - mil gracias) has visuals on it. I altered it to suit my classroom expressions. I have also created a set of Classroom Expressions and Commands Mini-Poster set (prints out on 8-1/2 by 11 inch paper) based on the student help sheet to print out and post on the front wall of my classroom. If a student doesn't understand my directions I can now just point to the picture and save myself some acting energy. Please help yourselves. Look under ACTIVITIES SPAN1. It is at the top of the page. http://mysite.verizon.net/vze4q55t Driskill, D.J. Re: Classroom expressions and commands student help sheet. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. Title: WebQuest: Spanish Countries & Their Symbols
Body: A Spanish teacher on the FLTEACH listserv (Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU) recently posted the URL for a WebQuest she created for her high school students. The project is broken down into six parts: Introduction, Task, Process, Evaluation, Conclusion, and Credits, and could easily be used as-is or modified for use in your own class. http://www.webquest.org/questgarden/lessons/29834-060709115121/process.htm
