Title: Most Enthusiastic about Georgia's First Bilingual Public School
Body: Although two-thirds of the students come from English-speaking homes, most families sending their children to the Unidos Dual Language Charter School are excited about the new school's bilingual format. Families of Hispanic descent would like their children to continue to learn Spanish formally, and many non-Spanish-speaking families see the school as part of a trend which will help the U.S. change its mostly-monolingual image. Title: CASTEL-J in Hawaii Deadline Extended

The concern expressed in these inquiries is that it would be hard to submit a proposal dealing with technology almost one year ahead of the presentation. Since technology advances so rapidly, this type of inquiry is understandable. The committee has decided to extend the deadline. The new deadlines are as follows: November 30, 2006: Proposal Deadline December 31, 2006: Accepted proposals will be notified March 31, 2007: Manuscript Deadline for Conference Proceedings We welcome proposals for papers (20 min. followed by 10 min. discussion), panel sessions (70 min. followed by 20 min. discussion) posters, or workshops that deal with Japanese teaching/learning and computer technology. Title: New Book: Language, Religion and National Identity in Europe and the Middle East

Nationalist movements aimed at ‘unification’, based upon languages which vary greatly at the spoken level, e.g. German, Italian, Pan-Turkish and Arabic, have been associated with aggression, fascism and genocide, while those based upon relatively homogeneous spoken languages, e.g. Czech, Norwegian and Ukrainian, have resulted in national liberation and international stability. It is also shown that religion can be more important to national identity than language, but only for religious groups which were understood in premodern times to be national rather than universal or doctrinal, e.g. Jews, Armenians, Maronites, Serbs, Dutch and English; this is demonstrated with discussions of the Holocaust, the Armenian Genocide, the civil war in Lebanon and the breakup of Yugoslavia, the United Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Title: Recommended Book by Non-Native English Speaker
Body: A recent request to the TESL listserv for recommendations of books written by non-native speakers about living in the US received the following suggestion. ---- I found a gem of a book called "From a Town on the Hudson: A Japanese Woman's Life in America" by Yuko Koyano. The text level appears to be appropriate for intermediate learners. The book is about 109 pages long, a small hardcover edition available from Tuttle Publications, Japan. I bought my copy as a remainder in a San Francisco bookstore. However, you can find several low-cost copies on Amazon and Abebooks.com. Anthony, M. Title: Translating the Internet into Quechua
Body: Quechua recently joined the dozens of languages now available for Microsoft users, thanks to a project involving South American universities and the Microsoft Corporation. The fix amounts to a simple patch which may be freely downloaded and used to translate menus and commands. One of the first projects planned using the new software was a rewriting of the Bolivian constitution. Title: German Immersion Workshop
Body: The Missouri AATG, Goethe Instiitut Chicago, Max Kade Institute (Univ. of Wisc. - Madison) and the Dept. of German and Russian Studies (Univ. of Missouri - Columbia) are all happy to announce an Immersion Workshop on the campus of the University of Missouri. The workshop, presented by Antje Petty of the Max Kade Institute, and Daniela Pruß of the Goethe Institut, is based on the book "Das Paradies liegt in Amerika" by Karin Gündisch and the poster, "How German is American" from the Max Kade Institute. I am convinced it will be an entertaining and productive day. The cost, including book, poster, materials and lunch is $30. This workshop will be in conducted in German. Wyndham Hotel, Phoenix, Arizona Nov. 8-12, 2006 Conference Theme The theme of NAME’s 2006 conference emanates from the historical connections to the stories and struggles in the contested homelands of the Indigenous peoples in the southwest of the United States and worldwide. The media depiction of Indigenous people often paints a romantic image of noble, passive people situated outside contemporary lifestyle and technology. In the southwest there is the image of a painted desert against the red rocks of the golden sunset, when in truth marginalized communities struggle to survive in the stolen lands of the original inhabits. Moreover, the Indigenous people struggle to re-defi ne the misplaced borders, negotiate their cultural identities, and speak their fi rst languages. The theme calls upon presenters to tell the many stories of struggle that validate and honor multicultural communities, diverse worldviews and perspectives. While we chose the contested homeland as the site for our conference, we welcome the story of all people, worldwide who struggle for equity and justice. Presentations will provide participants an opportunity to share their cultural stories and develop collective strategies for achieving social justice. The goals of honoring multicultural communities, stories and struggles in a contested land, are truly at the heart of power, resistance, and survival for multicultural citizens worldwide. Consistent with NAME’s mission, presentations will present signifi cant research and/or share promising practices relative to issues of race ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic status, language, gender, age, disability, immigrant status, religion and sexual orientation.
