Title: Professional Development Seminar for Teachers of Russian
Body: The College Board and the American Council of Teachers of Russian are pleased to announce the 2006 Professional Development Seminar for Teachers of Russian, to be held at Bryn Mawr College the week of July 17, 2006. The seminar is of particular importance for American teachers of Russian who are planning to introduce the AP® Russian Language and Culture course in their schools as soon as it becomes available. Participants will learn about the goals and practices of the Advanced Placement Program® with special emphasis on the new Russian Web-based curriculum and teacher authoring tools especially designed for the AP Russian Language and Culture course. Teachers will also be become familiar with the design and approach to language assessment represented by the forthcoming standards-based AP Russian Language and Culture Exam, which is administered at the end of the AP course. Upon successful completion of the seminar, participants will receive a certificate in recognition of their training and one graduate unit (4 hours) of academic credit from Bryn Mawr College. The seminar is led by a group of peer-mentors, current teachers of Russian who have piloted the advanced Russian course in their classrooms, as well as specialists from the College Board, ACTR, and the Bryn Mawr Department of Russian. The 2006 Summer Seminar in Russian is supported by the College Board and ACTR. Full or partial fellowships are available to qualified U.S. teachers to attend the 2006 seminar. Participants may also request support from their school districts or principals for assistance in covering the costs of the seminar. The workshop coincides with the annual Bryn Mawr Russian Language Institute, an annual summer immersion language program that provides additional opportunities for using Russian outside of the seminar sessions. The Professional Development Seminar is open to high school teachers interested in starting an Advanced Placement Russian Program. The Foundation for Endangered Languages, in association with the Central Institute of Indian Languages, will hold its annual 2006 conference in India, home of more than a thousand languages and dialects, and a consciously multilingual policy stance by the Government of India. Although many of these languages enjoy political and economic patronage, others are struggling to survive. Among these strugglers are the languages of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where communities are not only tiny, but also some of the most anciently independent tribes on the planet. Title: Activities for Teaching the Passe Compose
Body: Are you looking for some new ideas for introducing the passé composé to your classes? Here are a few recent suggestions from the FLTEACH listserv. ---- I will print copies of articles from French language newspapers and have them highlight either past participles, forms of avoir or etre, or both. When they are first learning the passe compose, I also have the kids number the 3 parts (1. Subject, 2. helping verb, 3. past participle) to stress the importance of all three. Matz, M. If not, use many examples in French, give students a printed list of these functions and point to the examples. Tell two stories in the present tense: one with only narrative elements, one with a mixture of narrative and non-narrative elements. Convert the all-narrative paragraph into passé composé. Do a guided conversion of the second one. Now devide the room into two or more teams. Give them a third (narrative and non narrative) paragraph, but where the narrative could stand on its own. Tell the teams to convert only the appropriate sentances into passé composé, submit them to you. Count off for errors in passé composé, but also for converting an inappropriate sentence. This can all be done before they learn imperfect, and will almost guarantee that they will be sensitive to the difference when they come to it. Peckham, B. Re: activities on le passé composé. Body: Region 5 Media Center of the Department of Education in New York City has uploaded a staff development segment on using the Internet as comprehensible input in the world langauge classroom featuring Eva Fernandez of Queens College. Anyone can download this segment by loging on to iTunes.com and searching "TECH IN FIVE". The segment is called "Technology Foreign Langauge Classroom". There is no charge for this download. Title: Chinese Site for Learners
Body: The Ting Study Center is for learners of Chinese and English who wish to improve their ability to understand a variety of accents. More than 40 native Chinese speakers (who are not trained actors) have been recorded saying the same words and phrases in their regional accents, whether they are from Beijing or the countryside. All are speaking Mandarin. The site also provides flash cards, for use online or at home, to study characters, pinyin, English translation, or sound.
