Title: Online Rubric Resource
Body: Rubistar is a great source of ready-made rubrics, or simply inspiration for your own rubrics. If you don't find a rubric at Rubistar that someone else has already made that suits your needs, Rubistar lets you create your own and customize it completely. There are suggested categories listed but if you don't find the category you want in the drop-down boxes on the left, you can add your own. Of course at that point, it's not really any easier than creating it in a table in Word - except that your rubric becomes available for others to use as an example. http://rubistar.4teachers.org Addis, S. Title: Call for Papers: Die Unterrichtspraxis
Body: The Unterrichtspraxis/Teaching German is interested in a variety of articles, including research-based articles on teaching German, language acquisition, assessment, and curricular design. We are also interested in short reports, teaching tips for the classroom, and letters to the editor in response to something read (or not found) in the journal. Please feel free to contact me if you have an idea that you would like to suggest. Length need not dissuade people from submitting something to the journal. Over the years the journal has gotten away from the shorter pieces that characterized it in the beginning. I would like to include more, shorter pieces, but I need to receive some submissions to do so. Title: Recommended Video Series for French Learners
Body: A while back I suggested a program that runs on French TV, C'est Pas Sorcier, as a great source of high quality science and history documentaries for kids. My daughter, 4 yrs old, loves the show, but it is made for older children. I just saw a program, "La Nutrition, Mangeons équilibré !" It's a great sources of information in French on all things related to nutrition. Food groups, meals, digestion, etc. Great video in the market too. The shows are copyright free for school use. http://www.gap.ien.05.ac-aix-marseille.fr/rre/article.php3?id_article=632 http://programmes.france3.fr/66381-fr.php Of course, it IS French, so moderation wins out over abstinence and there may be things that are not allowed in some US schools. For instance, they explain the health value of one or two glasses of red wine each day. Peckham, B. Video for food topic (French). Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. Title: Exercises for Struggling Spellers
Body: A recent request on the FLTEACH listserv (Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU) for activities to facilitate spelling practice received the following reply. Although this was submitted by a teacher of German, the format of these materials might be useful for teachers of any language whose students have trouble with spelling. ---- A few years ago an 11-year-old native speaker of German arrived at my secondary school and together we decided to enter her for an exam in the language which is normally designed for 16-year-olds. Her speaking and listening skills were predictably sound, but as she had left Germany before learning to read and write the language, she had spelling issues with written German, the product of interference from the language she had learnt to read and write in, English. She spelled "Schule" as "Shoole", for example. I wrote a spelling course for her, which proved very successful as she eventually achieved a grade A in her writing paper. I have posted the German spelling course at http://www.specialeducationalneeds.com/mfl/year7german/spelling/ . I wonder whether something similar could be produced for Spanish (which isn't one of my teaching languages)? Both German and Spanish are orthographically transparent languages, so the process of identifying phoneme/grapheme correspondence shouldn't be as difficult as it would be for languages with opaque spelling systems such as English. It might be worth having a look at learning-to-read books for native speakers of Spanish where the groundwork on sound-symbol correspondence will have been done. Using L1 techniques such as this to teach the same language as L2 has proved effective with high-functioning learners with dyslexia and may well work for everybody, with or without learning disabilities.
