Title: Internet and Global English(es) -- LLT issue
Body: From: "Jean LeLoup" DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS EXTENDED Theme: The Internet and Global English(es) Guest Editor: Denise Murray This special issue of Language Learning & Technology will focus on research on the effect of the Internet on language use. While the theme recognizes "Global" English(es) as a reality, we welcome articles that problematize this concept. In what ways are the notions of "Global" English(es) reinforced or mitigated by the use of English on the Internet? What new English(es) are developing online? What new registers or genres are developing in computer mediated communication? What is the impact of globalization on the English teaching industry? What are the implications of Internet-specific language change for English language teaching? Articles based on empirical research or proposing original theoretical frameworks are welcome. Since LLT focuses on language learning and teaching, it is expected that all articles will demonstrate the relevance of the findings or framework to language learning and teaching. Possible topics include, but are not limited to * how the Internet diffuses English(es) throughout the world * how the Internet has affected English usage in online and offline communication * descriptions of new genres * economic, political, and cultural ramifications of English use on the Internet * teaching English via the Internet * developing critical literacies through the Internet * varieties of English for international communication(s) * "Global" English in an historical context * visual literacy and its role in online communication and English language teaching If interested in submitting, please contact Denise Murray (denise.murray@mq.edu.au). Data were collected on a variety of topics related to distance education, including the number and proportion of institutions offering distance education courses during the 2000–2001 12-month academic year, distance education enrollments and course offerings, and distance education degree and certificate programs. To download, view and print the report as a pdf file, please visit: http://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/pubsinfo.asp?pubid=2003017 The U.S. Department of Education will be conducting a live interactive audio webcast on this release on Friday, July 18, 2003 11:30am EDT. Title: The Knowledge Loom
Body: From: "Anselmo Villanueva" The Educational Alliance at Brown University has developed an "award-winning" website that you may find useful and in which you can participate by registering. The Knowledge Loom http://knowledgeloom.org/crt/index.jsp The Knowledge Loom is a place for educators worldwide to do the following: - Review research that identifies best practices related to various themes. - View stories about the practices in real schools/districts. - Learn to replicate the success of these practices in your own organization. - Add your own stories, knowledge, questions to the collections. - Participate in online events and discussions. - Discover supporting organizations and resources. The Knowledge Loom is currently focusing on Culturally Responsive Teaching. What is Culturally Responsive Teaching? The notion of culturally responsive education is premised on the idea that culture is central to student learning. According to Gloria Ladson-Billings, "It is an approach that empowers students intellectually, socially, emotionally, and politically by using cultural referents to impart knowledge, skills and attitudes." The use of cultural referents in teaching bridges and explains the mainstream culture, while valuing and recognizing the students' own cultures. This link between culture and classroom instruction is derived from evidence that cultural practices shape thinking processes, which serve as tools for learning within and outside of school (Hollins, l996). Thus, culturally responsive education recognizes, respects, and uses students' identities and backgrounds as meaningful sources (Nieto, 2000) for creating optimal learning environments. The New England Equity Assistance Center (EAC) at the Education Alliance at Brown University presents research-based principles for effective practices that can be used in schools and districts to address Cultural Relevance in Teaching.
