Title: Seeking Spanish Teacher
Body: From: "Kent Noland" Duties will include teaching Spanish 1 and Spanish 2, usually three of the former, and two of the latter. We are located in the heart of the Navajo Reservation, a bit isolated to be sure, but for someone starting out, it is ideal. Rent is nominal as non Navajo people cannot own property here. School housing rents for 85 a month for a one bedroom unit, 100 for a two, and 115 for a three. You pay no water bill, no sewer bill, and maintenance on the housing is done by Service Master, so you can live well on a mere pittance of rent. Units are air conditioned, all electric and have the kitchen equipment provided. Please respond to me. I will provide you with links for the school web page so you can check it out and see where your education would place you on the pay scale, and you can see the housing, and even get forms to start the process. I will give you whatever information you request regarding this position and the territory surrounding the school. I will be retiring in three years, and would like to get a good Spanish teacher in here to take over when that happens. There are all sorts of opportunities for advancement, and with the low rent and utilities, you can sock away a bit of a nest egg in little or no time. Hope to hear from you. Sorry this is so late in the year, but I just found out about the loss of our other professor. Classes start next Monday, but we can work you in if you are sincere. Title: Understanding Cultural Differences
Body: From: David J. Rosen Dear Colleague, We will soon begin the fifth year of a fascinating free project in which classes and schools across the world are matched for a Web-based "virtual visit." This year's project is called the Understanding Cultural Differences Classroom Virtual Visit Project because adult learners, and young people in elementary and secondary schools, will not only share with their partner schools pictures and writing about themselves, their school and their community, but they will also choose a cultural understanding theme to discuss. The project is for students who would like to learn and collaborate in a global environment using email and the World Wide Web, and who would like to discuss strategies for overcoming cultural misunderstanding, ending cultural conflicts, and/or bringing about world peace. This year, too, we will encourage partnering sites to choose a film or video which students at both sites can view, and then discuss by email. The exchanges are usually conducted in English, and many of the students are learning English as a second or other language (ESL/ESOL). You can see completed projects from the previous four years at http://www.otan.dni.us/webfarm/emailproject/email.htm (choose the "a Virtual School Visit" link) If this sounds like a project you would like to learn more about, and possibly participate in, go to the International Classroom Virtual Visit electronic list sign-up page, subscribe, then write a message introducing yourself and your class. You can also view archives there of others' introduction messages. http://lists.literacytent.org/mailman/listinfo/icvv Please share this announcement with others who you think may be interested. Title: "Failing Our Kids: Why the Testing Craze Won't Fix Our Schools"
Body: From: "Anselmo Villanueva" In the midst of growing controversy and opposition to the testing and adequate yearly progress (AYP) provisions of the NCLB, Rethinking Schools announced that as of July 15, 2003 it is making available at cost its widely praised book, "Failing Our Kids: Why the Testing Craze Won't Fix Our Schools." The book features more than 50 articles by parents, community activists, teachers, students, and researchers that provide a comprehensive indictment of high-stakes testing. "Failing Our Kids reveals in vivid and poignant detail not only why the testing craze won't fix our schools, but how it undermines our goal of high-quality teaching and learning for all children," said Jeannie Oakes, professor at the University of California-Los Angeles and author of "Keeping Track: How Schools Structure Inequality." Rethinking Schools editors made the decision at their recent national meeting in order to contribute to the growing movement against the NCLB. "We hope that by making this book available to a broader audience we will help the struggle against these anti-child provisions of the NCLB," stated Bob Peterson, an editor of Rethinking Schools. Contributors to "Failing Our Kids" understand the need to asses how our children and schools are doing. Thus the book details innovative student assessment practices that have proven successful in a growing number of schools nationwide. Several of the articles argue that relying on standardized tests distorts student learning, exacerbates inequities for low-income students and students of color, and undermines true accountability. Other articles provide specific ideas on how to improve the quality of education through using more authentic forms of assessment. Edited by Barbara Miner, former managing editor, and Kathy Swope, editor of Rethinking Schools, "Failing Our Kids" is a must read for anyone interested in countering the testing and AYP provisions of the NCLB legislation. "Failing Our Kids" is divided into seven chapters -- offering the views of parents, students and classroom teachers, as well as research by noted scholars on the history and consequences of standardized testing. Other chapters look at alternatives to standardized tests and how standards and testing affect the education of students of color. The final chapter includes an extensive resource listing of local, state, and national organizations fighting against standardized testing, as well listing of books, publications, and web sites on critiques of testing and possible alternatives. To see the complete table of contents visit www.rethinkingschools.org, click on publications and then Failing Our Kids. Single copies are available for $8 at www.rethinkingschools.org. Starting July 15, 2003, however, orders of 25 or more for distribution (not resale) at conferences, staffs, or classrooms are available for only $2 each plus shipping. Rethinking Schools encourages teacher and parent activists, as well as university professors to take advantage of this unique offer. To take advantage of this special offer go to www.rethinkingschools.org and use the code 5BFOK1 when ordering "Failing Our Kids." Bob Peterson Editor Rethinking Schools 1001 E.
