Title: Recommended Authentic Reading and Listening Materials
Body: I would encourage those interested in free online reading texts to check these two resources: First, the Voice of America, which includes both reading and listening materials, all in the public domain. Check out the contents pages at http://www.voanews.com/english . Also check out the Special English section for articles written at a lower level of difficulty and recorded more slowly. Another great resource is the Literacyworks Learning Resources site which provides practice in reading and listening to news stories from CNN and CBS Channel 5 in California. Each story is accompanied by the original video clip, a transcription of the story, an abridged version, an outline, and interactive reading comprehension exercises. The story archive is at http://literacynet.org/cnnsf/archives.html . Baker, L. Free reading texts. Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list. Title: Content-based Reading Activities
Body: Here is an idea for a content-based reading class which includes other activities. This NIFL (National Institute for Literacy) -recommended website has thousands of links to primary sources from the world's leading libraries, archives and governmental web sites. http://www.awesomestories.com It is free to all educators, schools and libraries worldwide. The links - to animations, pictures, graphics, maps and audio/visual clips - draw students into the stories and hold their interest. Here are some examples of the links: An animation depicting how hurricanes form (from the BBC): http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4588149.stm An animation of how volcanic ash from Vesuvius buried Pompeii: http://www.awesomestories.com/disasters/stories/pompeii/images/buried.gif How icebergs form: http://www.uscg.mil/lantarea/iip/FAQ/Icebergs_4.shtml and what they sound like when the break away from the glacier: http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Rapids/4233/ijsbergen.htm (scroll down about halfway to the audio link on this iceberg website). Title: Reading Review Activity
Body: Here is an idea I use for my readers that the students like. I call it "Wer hat es gesagt oder Wer hat es gemacht?" Who said it or who did it? At the end of the reader or book, I have the students find quotes from a character or paraphrase/describe what a character did. The students create the game questions, which I later use on the test. On review day, I write the characters' names on the board and put a marker on a table with a student from each team sitting on either side of the table, hands in their laps. I say the quote and the first one who grabs the marker (or with the most hands on it) gets to answer with a character's name. If wrong, the other side has a chance to earn the point. This also works for vocab or past participle review. There can be a bit of wrestling if the marker flies off the table, but it's generally a quiet activity. If they don't understand the quote or sentence, the class works through it together to translate. Then I give the two players a new quote. I intersperse their quotes with real quotes from the test, and the students review quite a bit of the vocabulary and storyline. Bauman, K.
