Title: England Moves toward Foreign Language Education in Primary Schools
Body: England recently announced plans for teacher funding and training that will enable all students from seven to eleven years of age to study foreign languages. The decision came after a study found that language teachers there lack confidence in both linguistic competence and teaching methodology. While many are concerned over English students' lack of foreign language skills, legislation went into effect in September of this year allowing students over 14 to stop studying foreign languages. Created by CCSF instructor Giorgio Spano, there are many explanations (The Electronic Classroom), interactive exercises (the Exercise Mill), and games. Also by Giorgio is the "Gesti" site which contains video clips of Italian gestures, organized by theme (gestures from Mangiare e bere" to "Minacce", plus everything else!) Title: Call for Papers: Journal of Borderlands Education
Body: Journal of Borderlands Education (JBE) is announcing an inaugural peer-reviewed online journal dedicated to exploring the multiple aspects of borderlands education in and around the United States and abroad. JBE publishes critical, integrative pieces of research and literature pertaining to education and the notions of borders and the borderland. Potential publications should include conceptualizations, interpretations, and syntheses of literature and scholarly work in the respective field. Likewise, JBE encourages the submission of research and creative works relevant to education from any discipline, such as psychology, sociology, history, philosophy, political science, economics, instructional technology, statistics, anthropology, and biology, provided that the review centers on educational and border/borderland issues. The following categories are represented in JBE: Curriculum, Instruction, Policy Analysis, and Creative Works. JBE welcomes a wide variety of submissions. Submission might include field-based experiences or research, papers on the successful practices to promote school improvement in border communities, discussions of the application of research to practice, position papers, literature reviews, artistic works regarding the border, and book reviews. Generally, submissions that are selected should be accessible to a wide audience (informal, practical, and readable format). For detailed submission requirements please refer to the JBE web site: http://education.nmsu.edu/jbe and click on the Guidelines link. To complete the submission process click on the Submissions link, fill out the information, and attach your document. The JBE embraces broader interpretations of the notions regarding borders and borderlands in relation to education issues. As an example, research examining Hmong studentsÂ’ experiences as they adapt to educational environments in the Midwest would be of interest the JBE community. The JBE has interest in exploring a broader notion of borders/borderlands than fixed geographical lines. In recognition of this notion of borders/borderlands, the JBE aspires to include multiple languages. Currently, the JBE has resources to accept submissions in Spanish and English. Thank you for your kind attention. For inquiries contact Dr. David Rutledge at rutledge@nmsu.edu McGinnis, S.G. CFP (new journal): Journal of Borderlands Education. Title: Radio Goethe
Body: Radio Goethe is a program featuring bands from Germany. The music on the show spans Krautrock to Industrial to more modern sounds such as progressive electronic music and harder tunes. Radio Goethe presents a young and modern view of Germany, is a non-commercial 60 minute show hosted in English, in its ninth year and free of charge. My experience is that listeners of non-commercial radio are much more open to different sounds and are willing to hear music from abroad as well. Therefore I would like to find other stations interested in this weekly one hour program. If you know of any station in your area or at your school/College that would be open to air this show, please let me know. Radio Goethe is online at http://www.radiogoethe.org, where you can find playlists, featured interviews, and the latest shows as mp3 files for download or stream. I am also happy to send you a sample CD. Regards, Arndt Peltner info@radiogoethe.org Peltner, A. [AATG-L] Radio Goethe. American Association of Teachers of German listserv.
