Title: Call for Papers: The Teaching of Literature and Culture
Body: From: http://rapidintellect.com/AEQweb/win0222.htm Academic Exchange Quarterly Winter 2005, Volume 9, Issue 4 Expanded issue up to 400+ pages. Articles on various topics plus the following special section: The Teaching of Literature and Culture Feature Editor: Rebecca L. Chism, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Foreign Language Pedagogy Kent State University E-mail: rlchism@kent.edu Focus: This issue revolves around the theory and practice of the teaching of literature and culture. The role of literature and culture is undergoing a dramatic evolution in light of the developments of the twenty-first century. The changes brought about by the global economy and the precipitous growth of technology have influenced the role of literature and culture for today’s world. Literature is no longer seen as an isolated discipline worthy of the humanists alone; culture is no longer seen as an all-inclusive phenomenon. Herein we will discuss the future of the ways literature and/or culture are taught, the influence and integration of literature and culture in other disciplines, and the affective and ethical issues involved. Who Should Submit: Those who have engaged in the teaching of culture and/or literature, who have integrated literature and/or culture in non-traditional disciplines, those who have developed technologies toward the teaching of literature/culture, and those who have analyzed the role of literature/culture on students’ attitudes are encouraged to submit. Papers may be in the forms of case studies, research in progress, or theoretical papers.

Title: Call for Papers: Digital Collaboration with Language, Literature, and Culture
Body: Call for Papers: Special Session of the Kentucky Foreign Language Conference, April 20-22, 2006 in Lexington, KY The Wiki-World Web: Digital Collaboration Models in Language, Literature, and Culture. Deadline for submission of abstracts: 15 November 2005 As academic institutions digitize their collections, the result is a new digital (often multimedia) canon that is readily accessible and searchable by scholars. Increasingly, commentary accompanies these digital collections, or entire sites dedicated to commentary emerge. This session analyzes both the digital collections available to foreign language scholars and the process of collaboration that is behind the formation of such databases. The session seeks to provide a broad overview of a variety of these collections (text, image, audio, video) in order to critically analyze their efficacy in foreign language, literary, and cultural studies. Possible submissions could include: - Critical analysis of major collaborative sites in literary studies. (e.g. Wikipedia, Gutenberg) - Overview of how reception in contemporary literature is affected in the digital age. (Blogs, review sites, etc) - Survey of materials available in a variety of areas in cultural studies (e.g. Film studies) - Pedagogical applications of academic digital asset collections. (e.g. text based, audio, video, and image repositories) - Description of digital asset management projects in culture or literature. Papers will be 20 minutes in length, followed by a 10-minute discussion period. Email proposals of no more than two pages in length to session organizer Michael Shaughnessy: mshaughnessy@washjeff.edu All scholars are invited to submit abstracts. All language sections may submit proposals for this open section. To encourage multi-language participation in this panel, papers are to be given in English. Acceptance of your paper for presentation implies a commitment on your part to register and attend the conference. All presenters and attendees must pay the appropriate registration fee by 15 FEBRUARY 2006 and fill out the A/V request form to ensure availability of any equipment necessary for their presentations. For more information on the conference, please visit www.uky.edu/as/kflc Shaughnessy, M. [AATG-L] CFP: Digital collaboration with language, literature, and culture. Title: TESOL Symposium on ELT in Resource-Challenged Contexts
Body: From: http://www.tesol.org/s_tesol/sec_document.asp?CID=23&DID=2945 TESOL Symposium on ELT in Resource-Challenged Contexts Sofitel Teranga Dakar Hotel Dakar, Senegal December 16-17, 2005 Given the growing role of English as a global language, English language teaching (ELT) affects economic, political, and social development in countries worldwide. Sub-Saharan Africa, a region with tremendous linguistic diversity, offers challenges as well as opportunities for ELT. Common challenges include coping with overcrowded classrooms, managing with a lack of resources, and designing appropriate and relevant materials. This TESOL symposium provides an opportunity for English language teaching professionals in Sub-Saharan Africa to learn from and interact with leading experts in the field and their colleagues in the region. The speakers will share their work and research on ELT in resource-challenged contexts to help participants develop insights and skills. In the morning, each speaker will present highlights of their work and perspectives on the topic. Each speaker will then lead an afternoon breakout session. During the closing session, another leading expert will summarize the topic and the speakers will answer participants' questions and comments. TESOL will publish and mail the speakers' papers and final proceedings to participants after the symposium. For more information, visit: http://www.tesol.org/s_tesol/sec_document.asp?CID=23&DID=2945
