Title: Request for Assistance: Heritage Language Programs
Body: The Alliance for the Advancement of Heritage Languages and the Center for Applied Linguistics (www.cal.org/heritage) are currently collecting profiles on heritage language programs in the United States. This online collection of profiles will allow heritage language programs in community-based, K–12, and university settings to form a network to exchange ideas and resources with one another. We need your help! If you are a teacher or a coordinator of a heritage language program, or a heritage language strand in another educational program, we encourage you to fill out a Heritage Language Program Profile. The profile form takes only about 20 minutes to complete and will provide you, as well as us, with interesting information about your program. You can submit it online or print and fax it to us. For more information and to fill out the profile, go online at http://www.cal.org/heritage. Help us get the word out! With the help of all heritage language programs, we can offer a comprehensive collection of information and resources. Please let other heritage language program developers and staff know about the National Heritage Languages Web site and encourage them to complete a profile on their program. Questions? We can help! If you have questions, email Adriana Val at aval1@umbc.edu. Thank you for your collaboration. Title: Advocate the Study of German
Body: Relatively recently, Goethe-Institut put together a Werbemappe Pro-Deutsch that is a large collection of various materials that can be used to communicate to students, parents, and school administrators the importance of learning German and keeping a German program alive. It is available as a binder from the AATG Web store or free of charge from the GI website: http://www.goethe.de/ins/us/prj/pdt/adv/enindex.htm The links on the left should take you to sample letters as well as to an "Action plan" with concrete ideas and steps that one can take to "stay afloat" and thrive! I hope this helps. You can also request printed advertising materials (such as brochures and posters) from your local Goethe-Institut. They will gladly send you what they have! Liamkina, O. Current plans include English-Spanish programs as well as possible Asian languages such as Vietnamese, Mandarin, or Tagalog. Title: English Language Learner Population Grows
Body: A recent study by the Migration Policy Institute and the Urban Institute revealed several telling trends among limited-English students in the U.S. Researchers found that these students are often of low socioeconomic status and segregated into a small number of schools, and half of them were born in the U.S., indicating that even attending English-speaking classes their entire lives had not led to proficiency.
