TitleHelpful Ideas for New English Language Learners
Body
The following suggestions, recently posted to the FLTEACH listserv, were written in response to a request for ideas for helping elementary English language learners feel more comfortable in their new environment, but some may be useful for adult learners as well.

----

I have found that ESL students of any grade like to know about their school enviornment. Make them familiar with the routine - where is the bathroom, etc. A special visit to the principal, getting to know the name of the principal, the librarian (cafeteria workers are ntoriously soft hearted), give a list of student names to all these adults and their countries, get maps of the US, books with pictures of their home countries, etc. Teach them the school fight song or cheers, the name of the school team, the Star Spangled Banner and just a few fun songs (Bobby Mc Ferrin's 'Don't worry, Be Happy'). If you can do a team competition with all of this information, or word search, or crossword, so much the better.
