Title: When Do You Say "Yes"?
Body:

Today's Activity of the Week is designed to accompany Mandy Gettler's Topic of the Week article about saying "no" and saying "yes." Using this attached reflection template, note what you say "yes" to, both implicitly and explicitly, and then explore how you could say "no" at times so that you can say "yes" at bigger times.

A Guide to Using Corpora for English Language Learners
By Robert Poole
Published by Edinburgh University Press

This textbook will help you unlock and access the great potential of corpus linguistics for language learning. While other books discuss how instructors may implement corpora in the classroom, this book provides step-by-step illustrated examples to help learners, graduate students, and language instructors visualize and understand the potential of corpus linguistics for language learning. It guides you through the application of corpus searches for writing, vocabulary and cultural study and provides guidance on building your own corpus. The hands-on approach will strengthen your development into an autonomous language learner and help instructors learn to design and implement their own corpus activities. With tutorials on a range of popular and increasingly user-friendly corpora, it helps usher in a new era of corpus-aided language learning.

Title: Book: Theorizing and Analyzing Language Teacher Agency
Body:

From http://www.multilingual-matters.com/display.asp?isb=9781788923903

Theorizing and Analyzing Language Teacher Agency
Edited by Hayriye Kayi-Aydar, Xuesong (Andy) Gao, Elizabeth R. Miller, Manka Varghese, and Gergana Vitanova
Published by Multilingual Matters

This volume examines the agency of second/foreign language teachers in diverse geographical contexts and in both K-12 and adult education. It offers new understandings and conceptualizations of second/foreign language teacher agency through a variety of types of empirical data. It also demonstrates the use of different methodologies or analytic tools to study the multidimensional, dynamic and complex nature of second/foreign language teacher agency. The chapters draw on a range of theories and approaches to language teacher agency (including ecological theory, positioning theory, complexity theory and actor-network theory) that expand our understanding of the concept, while at the same time presenting various analytic approaches such as discourse studies and narrative inquiry. The chapters also analyze the connection of agency to other relevant topics, such as teacher identity, emotions, positioning and autonomy.

Title: Call for Proposals: Multilingual Academic and Professional Communication in a Networked World
Body:

From https://linguistlist.org/issues/30/30-2616.html

The joint AELFE-TAPP Conference, which will take place in Barcelona, Spain, July 8-10, 2020, brings together the 19th annual conference of AELFE (Asociación Europea de Lenguas para Fines Específicos/European Association of Languages for Specific Purposes) and the 2nd Conference of the Trans-Atlantic and Pacific Project (TAPP), a growing virtual exchange network that has developed transnational collaborative projects on specialised communication, translation and user experience. The combination of both conferences will allow participants to link the fields of languages for specific purposes (LSP) and telecollaboration/virtual exchange.

The topic of the AELFE- TAPP 2020 Conference will be: 'Multilingual Academic and Professional Communication in a Networked World."

In a networked era, we are faced with the challenges of faster and more complex communication involving a variety of languages, participants and modes. Academic and professional communication also poses challenges related to disciplinary literacies and interdisciplinary collaboration. As higher education is undergoing a process of increasing internationalization, through English-medium instruction (EMI) and internationalization at home and abroad, what is the role of LSP teaching and research? How can academics expand their international and multidisciplinary networks? How can educators best prepare future graduates for complex multilingual and multicultural work and study environments?

With an emphasis on the demands of international academic and professional language use as well as on the opportunities afforded by technology for collaboration and intercultural communication, the AELFE-TAPP 2020 Conference will provide scholars with the opportunity to discuss advances in academic and professional communication as well as in virtual exchange.

The proposal submission deadline is October 31, 2019.

Title: Call for Proposals: Language Testing Research Colloquium
Body:

From https://www.iltaonline.com/page/LTRC2020CallForProposals

42nd Annual Language Testing Research Colloquium
Assessment in multilingual contexts: models, practices, policies & challenges
Hammamet, Tunisia
9-13 June 2020

For many individuals and communities in our changing and globalized world, multilingualism has become the norm. The theme of LTRC 2020, “Assessment in multilingual contexts” attempts to tackle the many issues and challenges that we face as assessors of language ability in multilingual environments. Assessing this construct across multiple languages, for example, and doing so equitably, fairly and responsibly, is a complex institutional challenge; assessing the language competence of multilingual individuals is a similarly complicated undertaking. It requires not only test adaptation, but also innovation in test design, and novel views on how to tackle that challenge. How do language testers respond to the myriad of theoretical and empirical approaches that currently attempt to address these issues? How do language teachers cope with the assessment of multiple languages present in their classrooms? Why is it challenging for test designers to define the construct, to assess and to score language assessments in multilingual contexts? How do immigration officials or administrators, and immigrants and newcomers handle institutional language demands? How do we deal with high status languages that dominate those of lower status in institutional contexts? And what does all this mean for the assessment of language ability?

The aim of LTRC 2020 is to bring together researchers from around the world to address critical themes in assessment in multilingual environments. The organizers do not wish to limit potential contributions in any way with the few examples given here; they aim to have a diverse set of approaches to the models and the policies that may be adopted to solve this complex issue, and they therefore welcome a range of approaches for discussion at the conference. They also welcome papers and presentations on other topics in language assessment.

The call for proposals will close on Thursday, 15 October 2019.
