The Legal Recognition of Sign Languages: Advocacy and Outcomes Around the World
Edited by Maartje De Meulder, Joseph J. Murray, and Rachel L. McKee
Published by Multilingual Matters
This book presents the first ever comprehensive overview of national laws recognizing sign languages, the impacts they have and the advocacy campaigns which led to their creation. It comprises 18 studies from communities across Europe, the US, South America, Asia and New Zealand. They set sign language legislation within the national context of language policies in each country and show patterns of intersection between language ideologies, public policy and deaf communities’ discourses. The chapters are grounded in a collaborative writing approach between deaf and hearing scholars and activists involved in legislative campaigns. Each one describes a deaf community’s expectations and hopes for legal recognition and the type of sign language legislation achieved. The chapters also discuss the strategies used in achieving the passage of the legislation, as well as an account of barriers confronted and surmounted (or not) in the legislative process. The book will be of interest to language activists in the fields of sign language and other minority languages, policymakers and researchers in deaf studies, sign linguistics, sociolinguistics, human rights law and applied linguistics.

Title: Book: Critical Perspectives on Global Englishes in Asia

Critical Perspectives on Global Englishes in Asia: Language Policy, Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment
Edited by Fan Fang and Handoyo Puji Widodo
Published by Multilingual Matters
Although the notion of Global Englishes (GE) has been widely discussed in the literature, few books consider how GE can be translated into educational practice. This book addresses the incorporation of GE into language policy and curriculum, pedagogy and assessment practices, and focuses on a wide range of geographical and language contexts. Incorporating GE into language curriculum, pedagogy and assessment practices calls for a reframing of our pedagogical practices that take into account the use of Englishes in intercultural and multicultural encounters where people have different first languages and cultural backgrounds. This book will be of interest to policymakers, curriculum developers and practitioner-researchers in the area of English language education.

Welsh Speakers Urged to Create Digital Recordings
June 27, 2019
Welsh speakers worldwide are being asked to help safeguard the future of the Welsh language by recording their voices using Common Voice, an initiative run by the free software community Mozilla to improve digital services in the Welsh language.
The aim is to help technologies including phones, computers, and other electronic devices understand how people speak Welsh in order to make voice recognition open and accessible for speakers of the language.
If enough people commit to recording their voices, satellite navigation and systems for those with disabilities and visual impairments are some of the programs that will eventually be able to recognize and provide Welsh language services. The Welsh Government has a long-term strategy to achieve the target of a million Welsh speakers by 2050.
