Title: Maine Seal of Biliteracy
Body:
From http://maineclassics.org/2019/07/05/maine-seal-of-biliteracy/
The deadline for Class of 2019 students, who have completed AP or IB Language testing, to apply for the Maine Seal of Biliteracy is July 22, 2019. School districts should review the information on the Maine Seal of Biliteracy website (https://www.maine.gov/doe/learning/content/world-language/biliteracy) under the FAQ “Some tests listed on the criteria page do not report scores until after graduation. Will the Maine Seal of Biliteracy be award post-graduation?” to ensure that their district can meet the requirements to ensure students receive post-secondary recognition for the Maine Seal of Biliteracy. The application for the AP and IB students is also located on the website and attached to this email. If you have any questions, please reach out to Lavinia Rogers, World Language Specialist at the Department of Education at lavinia.m.rogers@maine.gov or 624-6825.

Title: Engaging Students’ Interest in China Outside the Classroom

Engaging Students’ Interest in China Outside the Classroom
Viral Content May Be the Cure
by Eleise Jones
Contrast these two perspectives: one of an award-winning Chinese language teacher, and another of a software-engineer-turned-YouTube-vlogger. The former—Ying Jin, from Cupertino, California—confesses, “I had a Twitter account for 11 years before I actually ever used it,” while the latter—Arieh Smith a.k.a. Xiao Ma (小马在纽约)—produces multiple highly-energized, bilingual videos each month, in addition to sharing his food and travel photos on Instagram.
After being named ACTFL’s 2018 Teacher of the Year, Jin was introduced to a community of educators through Twitter hashtags such as #langchat and #leadwithchinese, which language teachers use to share their ideas. She’s now connecting with dozens of other Chinese teachers through the WeChat platform.
Smith, a self-identified introvert, has built audiences in the hundreds of thousands on YouTube, Bilibili, and Weibo. He started with short clips of himself speaking Chinese; now he introduces Asian food, celebrities, and technology to people from all over the world passing through Times Square, NYC.
Regardless of their differences in generation and engagement on social media, both Jin and Smith are working from a shared premise: Chinese language and culture is exciting, and definitely not too difficult to learn.

The Life of Animals in Japanese Art
June 2 – August 18, 2019
National Gallery of Art
Washington, DC
The Life of Animals in Japanese Art covers 17 centuries (from the fifth century to the present day) and a wide variety of media—sculpture, painting, lacquerwork, ceramics, metalwork, textile, and the woodblock print. A selection of some 300 works, drawn from Japanese and American public and private collections, includes seven that are designated as Important Cultural Property by the Japanese government. The artists represented range from Sesson Shūkei, Itō Jakuchū, Soga Shōhaku, Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, to Okamoto Tarō, Kusama Yayoi, Issey Miyake, Nara Yoshitomo, and Murakami Takashi.
Covering 18,000 square feet in the East Building Concourse, the exhibition is organized into thematic sections that explore the various roles animals have played in the art of Japan.
