Title: History of Russian Media from Gorbachev to Yeltsin
Body:

From the SEELANGS listserv:

Here are two great resources: journalist Natalia Rostova (now in Washington DC) has compiled a history of Russia's media from Gorbachev http://gorbymedia.com to Yeltsin http://www.yeltsinmedia.com. The two sites would be terrific for late 20th c. culture courses (in Russian), for historical research, for advanced language courses, and just plain reading (it is sustained by donations). Natalia Rostova was senior correspondent at Slon.ru, staff writer at Segodnia, and author of articles in Nezavisimaia gazeta, Novaia gazeta, and Gazeta.ru. Thanks to Maxim Trudolubov (Kennan) for calling attention to it.

Condee, N. [SEELANGS] Two great resources for late 20c. culture and politics. SEELANGS listserv (SEELANGS@LISTSERV.UA.EDU, 2 Jul 2019).

Title: Classroom Management Trick: Points for Classes
Body:

From https://latinbestpracticescir.wordpress.com

Bob Patrick shares a technique he uses in his Latin classes, in which students record points for the class for behaviors such as putting cell phones away at the beginning of class, using the L2 in class, and using rejoinders. Patrick notes, "The effect of the process/game is to encourage students to use positive peer pressure to stay in L2. This by no means relieves us, the teachers, from having compelling content to work with or from making sure that everything said and read is comprehensible to everyone in the classroom."

Read how he implements this technique at https://latinbestpracticescir.wordpress.com/2019/07/06/staying-in-the-target-language/

Title: Stand Up/Sit Down Brain Break
Body:

From http://todallycomprehensiblelatin.blogspot.com

Here's an easy brain break activity: Read a list of statements. If the first statement is true for an individual, that person should stand up from sitting. From then on, if a statement is true, then the person should do the opposite of what they're doing right now: if he/she is standing, then sit down; if sitting, then stand up.

Read a full description of this activity and see Latin examples of statements at http://todallycomprehensiblelatin.blogspot.com/2019/06/stand-upsit-down-brain-break.html

The Boston French Film Festival
July 11–28, 2019

The 23rd annual Boston French Film Festival boasts an eclectic lineup of 20 new films produced in France—from comedy and romance to experimental cinema. This year’s festival opens on July 11 with a free outdoor screening of the gleefully absurd comedy The Trouble with You, starring Audrey Tautou and Adéle Haenel, and continues through July 28 with Claire Denis’s haunting science fiction film High Life, starring Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binoche; the psychedelic dance/horror film Climax, by Gaspar Noé (Enter the Void); Olivier Assayas’ clever comedy Non-Fiction, about a group of friends navigating the Paris publishing world; and more. The festival closes with I Feel Good, a hilarious send-up of modern capitalism and materialism starring the magnetic Jean Dujardin (The Artist).

Title: Students Learn English with School Garden
Body:

From https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20190621/how-a-garden-is-helping-naperville-students-learn-english

How a garden is helping Naperville students learn English
by Marie Wilson
June 21, 2019

When it comes to mastering a new language, it's often best to learn by doing.

That's the real reason English Language Learners teacher Melissa Eaton planted a garden at Cowlishaw Elementary School in Naperville.

It wasn't to grow produce to cook with students each fall in the teachers lounge, or to clean up an area that had turned to weeds amid a tight landscaping budget, or to teach students and parents what's a weed, what's a plant and how to make things grow -- although all those things have been positive side effects.

What Eaton originally was looking for, though, was a way to keep her students, who do not yet speak fluent English, learning through "realia" or "real stuff," during the summer.

"You do things, and then you read and write about it," Eaton said.

In the garden's first year, back in 2013, she quickly saw it worked.

Title: Blog Post: The Civil Rights of English Learners
Body:

From http://blog.tesol.org

Ayanna Cooper writes, "On 6 May 2019, the U.S. Department of Education OELA hosted the 2019 Multiliteracy Symposium. This symposium offered a number of topics and speakers addressing issues around school quality, the importance of fostering and supporting multilingualism, community/school partnerships, and advocacy. I was able to participate by watching the livestream. What I found most exciting was the call for support for multilingualism. The conversations did not focus on the importance of one language versus another but rather the benefits of dual language. The symposium begs the important question, 'If multiliteracy is an embedded part of our belief system, then what are we doing as educators to truly support all students and especially those from linguistically diverse backgrounds?'"

Read the full blog post for more, especially about the seal of biliteracy and three principles of multilingualism including "multilingualism is patriotic," at http://blog.tesol.org/the-civil-rights-of-english-learners/
