Immersion Education: Lessons from a Minority Language Context
By Pádraig Ó Duibhir
Published by Multilingual Matters

The body of research in this volume offers a detailed account of the success of young immersion learners of Irish in becoming competent speakers of the minority language. Taking account of in-class and out-of-class factors, it examines the variety of Irish spoken by the pupils, the extent to which the Irish spoken deviates from native-speaker norms, the degree to which pupils are aware of and attempt to acquire a native-like variety and the extent to which issues of identity and motivation are involved. The results highlight the limitations of an immersion system in generating active and accurate users of the language outside the immersion setting and will help immersion educators to gain a greater understanding of how young immersion learners learn and acquire the target language. The findings are placed in the context of other one-way immersion programs internationally with a particular focus on minority language settings and make an important contribution not only to our understanding of the Irish issues, but how the Irish situation can be placed in a broader scholarly and socio-political context.

Title: Book: Learner Corpora and Language Teaching

Learner Corpora and Language Teaching
Edited by Sandra Götz and Justus Liebig
Published by John Benjamins Publishing Company

While native corpora and corpus linguistic tools and methods have been used and applied for quite some time in the development of learning and teaching materials, learner corpora are only just beginning to impact the field of language teaching, testing and assessment. This volume helps to close this still existing gap and highlights the great potential of learner corpus research for language pedagogy by presenting a selection of 11 original studies on learner corpora, conducted by established experts as well as by excellent young researchers. The papers included in the volume present new corpora and methods; studies on written as well as spoken learner corpora and on using data-driven learning scenarios in the classroom.

All papers include sections on practical and concrete language-pedagogical applications. This volume will be of interest to researchers working in corpus linguistics, learner corpus research, second language acquisition and English for Academic and Specific Purposes, as well to language teachers and materials developers.

Learning Spaces for Inclusion and Social Justice: Success Stories from Four Nordic Countries
Edited by Hanna Ragnarsdóttir and Lars Anders Kulbrandstad
Published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing

This edited volume emanates from a Nordic research project which was conducted in Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden in 2013-2015. The main objective of the project was to draw lessons from success stories of individual immigrant students and whole school communities at different levels that have succeeded in developing learning contexts that are equitable and socially just, thus turning attention to good practices and what can be learnt from these.

The book presents and discusses the main findings of the Learning Spaces project on the three school levels—pre-, compulsory and upper secondary—and contains chapters on research methodologies applied in the project, relevant educational policies, leadership and implementation of the project. While set in the Nordic context, this volume will serve to contribute to current global discussions around diversity and social justice in education. It will primarily appeal to educational practitioners and academics interested in issues of diversity in schools.

Title: Call for Posters: Intersections of Language and Nature

Intersections of Language and Nature: Conservation, Documentation, and Access
September 6-8, 2019
University of Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

The two-day symposium brings together scholars from indigenous communities, conservation practice, the arts, and academia to address the parallel threats facing linguistic and biological diversity and explore opportunities for collaboration.

As scholarship on biocultural diversity has demonstrated, interesting correlations have been observed across linguistic and biological diversity. Using ethno-ornithology as a framework, participants will investigate the potential for holistic approaches to conservation and scholarship implicit in these observations.

Participants are invited to submit abstracts for poster sessions on any aspect of the intersections of nature and language. Please submit abstracts by July 15.
