Body: South Carolina is recruiting teachers in Spanish and French to begin a partial-immersion program. The job description is as follows: French/Spanish Immersion Teacher Characteristics Education/Experience • Degree in Early Childhood Education and/or Elementary Education • SC Certified or SC certifiable in Elem. Education • Background experience and/or clear understanding of second language acquisition and how children learn language • Must be comfortable in the target language within the content areas. • Immersion teaching experienc e or willingness to take coursework to become immersion certified. Language Ability • Native or near-native fluency in the target language preferred but not required • If teacher does not have a degree in the target language being taught and is NOT a native speaker, then the teacher should take the American Council for Teachers of Foreign Languages’ (ACTFL) Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) to determine his/her level of proficiency in the target language (contact ACTFL at www.actfl.org to get information on how to be administered the OPI). • If a native speaker, must be clearly comprehensible and able to communicate in writing and orally in English in order to be able to communicate with the parents, community, and administration and to fully understand job requirements. Responsibilities • Must have a clear understanding of the South Carolina Kindergarten standards and ability to teach them in the target language. • Work VERY closely (on a daily basis) with co-homeroom teacher to plan daily/weekly/monthly lessons/units. • Work on district teams to develop language curriculum for program • Serve as advocate for the immersion program (serve on planning and implementation committees for the immersion program and help with presentations/workshops to parents, administrators and community organizations). • Attend professional development conferences/workshops on immersion. • Must be willing to take any necessary coursework to become immersion certified. NOTE: Lexington School District One is a premiere district in the capital city region of SC. Our district is committed to implementing a model immersion program!
