Title: Using Shower Curtains for Word Walls
Body:

From http://musicuentos.com/

Shower curtains (specifically, the cheap white plastic liners) are a great resource for language classrooms. Imagine drawing a city map or household layout that students can walk on and moving objects around on.

Here is another use for shower curtains: to make word walls to use in classrooms when the language teacher must travel from room to room and carry his/her resources with him/her each time. Read how Sara-Elizabeth Cottrell does it at http://musicuentos.com/2018/03/word-wall/

Title: Summer Institutes by National Resource Centers
Body:

From https://orias.berkeley.edu/professional-development/national-resource-centers

There are dozens of federally funded National Resource Centers (NRCs) at universities around the United States (link is external). One of their many functions is to provide resources to help teachers internationalize American education. To do this, they provide curriculum materials, teacher education, travel opportunities for teachers, scholarly speakers, and more. Through these sites you can find a wide array of resources: lesson plans, culture boxes, and Skype-based classroom speakers, just to name a few.

Many NRCs also organize summer institutes for teachers. Some institutes have funding available to defray travel expenses for out-of-town participants.

See a list of NRCs and upcoming institutes at https://orias.berkeley.edu/professional-development/national-resource-centers

Title: Book: Usage-inspired L2 Instruction
Body:

Usage-inspired L2 Instruction: Researched pedagogy
Edited by Andrea E. Tayler, Lourdes Ortega, Mariko Uno, and Hae In Park
Published by the John Benjamins Publishing Company

This book presents a set of compelling essays collectively making a persuasive case for why a usage-based perspective on language is fast becoming a leading theoretical framework for investigating second language (L2) learning and the foundation for effective, innovative, engaging pedagogy. Drawing on 20 years of research in psychology, psycholinguistics, cognitive science, and linguistic theory, including discourse analytic approaches, the combined contributions paint a picture of theoretically-informed L2 pedagogy which emphasizes all facets of language as meaningful, embodied, and socially situated. The introduction and conclusion offer an outline of five foundational tenets essential to a usage-inspired pedagogy and a heuristic for developing usage-inspired L2 research and pedagogy. Each essay provides a unique vantage on usage-inspired L2 instruction and a demonstration of the efficacy of usage-based pedagogy. This volume will be invaluable for SLA researchers, graduate students, and classroom teachers interested in exploring usage-inspired L2 pedagogy.

Title: Book: The Field of Chinese Language Education in the U.S.
Body:

From https://www.routledge.com/The-Field-of-Chinese-Language-Education-in-the-US-A-Retrospective-of/Ling/p/book/9781138502024

The Field of Chinese Language Education in the U.S.: A Retrospective of the 20th Century
Edited by Vivian Ling
Published by Routledge Taylor & Francis Group

This book will be the first account of the development of Chinese as a foreign language in the U.S., as it interacts with the relevant entities in China and beyond. There are virtually no systematic retrospective reflections on the field outside of the greater China region; and yet over the past decades the field has grown by leaps and bounds, and it is critical now that we pause to reflect on what has happened and what we can learn from the past. The contributors are among some of the most influential pioneers in the field whose entire academic lives have been dedicated to its development.

The Field of Chinese Language Education in the U.S.: A Retrospective of the 20th Century is aimed at those who are currently engaged in Chinese language education, as teachers or as students.

Title: Northeast Modern Language Association Annual Convention
Body:

From https://www.buffalo.edu/nemla/convention.html

The 49th Annual Convention of the Northeast Modern Language Association will meet April 12 to 15, 2018, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It will feature approximately 400 sessions, as well as dynamic speakers and cultural events. Every year, this event affords NeMLA’s principal opportunity to carry on a tradition of lively research and pedagogical exchange in language and literature.

The theme of this year's convention is "Global Spaces, Local Landscapes and Imagined Worlds." We seek to examine the concept of spaces: their appropriation and occupation, the demarcation of borders, processes of inclusivity and exclusivity, as well as reproductive processes related to the creation of worlds—real, fantastic, and imagined. Pittsburgh, a city whose recent cultural explosion attracts visitors from around the United States and the world, provides the ideal backdrop for such thought provoking topics.
