The Center for Applied Linguistics has added to its series of free downloadable documents connecting research to practice around key topics related to language and culture. The most recent addition is "Interrogating the 'Language Gap'" by M. Beatriz Arias. The document highlights the work of Professor Jonathan Rosa at Stanford University, who provides a sociolinguistic critique on the terminology used to define emergent bilinguals and introduces a raciolinguistic framework as a way to interrogate the language gap and other deficit perspectives.

"Transforming Communities through Multilingualism"

NCDLI2019 is currently seeking proposals for papers, discussion sessions, and laptop poster sessions on aspects of immersion and dual language education related to five conference strands:

Strand I: Immersion Pedagogy and Assessment
Strand II: Culture, Identity, and Community
Strand III: Program Design and Evaluation
Strand IV: Policy, Advocacy, and Communications
Strand V: Professional Preparation and Learning

In addition to basic, applied, and evaluation research, conference organizers welcome a range of practitioner perspectives including those of immersion and dual language teachers, administrators, curriculum coordinators, pedagogical coaches, parents, and specialists who work in these programs. Paper/best practice sessions, and discussion sessions may report on data-based research, theoretical and conceptual analyses, or best practices in immersion and dual language classrooms. Laptop poster sessions will offer opportunities for informal, face-to-face discussions of research.
