Title: 5th National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language
Body:

From https://5sshl2018.weebly.com/

5th National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language
April 5-7, 2018
University of Iowa, Iowa City

The Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language (SSHL) is an initiative aimed to offer an intellectual forum to discuss the variable linguistic reality of Spanish heritage bilingualism in the United States (and elsewhere), and the diverse pedagogical needs of students of Spanish as a heritage language.

It serves as a venue for both researchers and educators at all levels to share, develop, and discuss theoretical and practical approaches that recognize and validate the study of Spanish as a heritage language from the perspectives of various academic disciplines.

The SSHL provides a space to bridge the gap between research findings and the praxis of heritage language teaching, as we collaborate towards the implementation of pedagogies that allow heritage learners not only to develop their language proficiency but also to reflect on their own identity formation.

Title: CANE Summer Institute
Body:

From http://caneweb.org/new/?page_id=165

The Classical Association of New England Summer Institute brings together students, educators, and lifelong learners for an intensive week of lectures, mini-courses, reading groups, professional development workshops, and special events. Each institute considers the literature, history, and arts of the ancient Greeks and Romans — and how we engage with those cultures today.

The 2018 institute will take place July 9-14, 2018, at Brown University, with the theme “Empires Ancient and Modern: Reactions to Imperial Power from Athens to the Americas.” While exploring the practices and problems of ancient empires, the institute’s events and discussions will also consider modern and contemporary engagements – the use, misuse, and abuse – of Classical models of empire. A number of the institute’s mini-courses and lectures will look closely at imperialism in the Americas alongside ancient models, while others will explore topics as wide-ranging as the challenges of writing about empire, imperialism in the Ancient Near East, and Satan’s empire in Milton’s Paradise Lost.

Registration is now open; the deadline to register is May 15. For full details and to register, go to http://caneweb.org/new/?page_id=165

Title: English Learners in Arizona
Body:

Arizona legislators are considering a bill to allow dual language immersion for English learners, an alternative to currently mandated four-hour blocks of intensive English immersion that Tucson Unified School District board member Kristel Foster calls educational "malpractice." Read more about it here: http://tucson.com/news/local/arizona-lawmakers-consider-alternatives-for-english-language-learners/article_0a6100e2-c334-59b3-96c1-49974b229aef.html

Meanwhile, listen to and read about millennials who have grown up in Arizona's public schools during the mandate reflect on the person impact of the current policy: https://news.azpm.org/p/news-articles/2017/11/28/120569-english-only-millennials-reflect-on-growing-up-latina-in-arizona-schools/

Title: El Futuro Maya II: Maya Voices in 1998 and in 2015
Body:

From http://uwm.edu/clacs/el-futuro-maya-ii/

The original El Futuro Maya: Voces del Presente was produced in 1998, shortly after the signing of the Guatemalan Peace Accords. The documentary focused on Maya voices – on what it means to be Maya, on the role of language, on hopes for the future. In 2015, a sequel was filmed, interviewing thirteen of the original participants and six new individuals. How have their perspectives changed and how do they describe the Maya Movement today?
